President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Did I hear him say that the area of the levy that broke was not one slated for repair if the budgeted monies came in?

Whatever the number turns out to be it appears the bloated federal bureaucracy is not able to respond in ways most Americans would expect it to respond.

I think there are going to be some angry voters come Nov 06.

They had just finished working on it and thought they had improved it in the last couple of years...

Glad you have power!

They aren't expecting it or phone soon! They are using text messages and this afternoon she was able to call out on the cell

No one can tell them how long it will be. Just to boil water.

I just talked with my Sweet Baby and he said they finally got a generator.

But they are still boiling water.
I don't know who told them to do that!
They are older and he has stomach cancer.
He's just started chemo and can't stand to be around too much noise.
All the kids are at the residence of her sister where they stayed for the last day or so.

They decided to get a generator and go back home.
(I had no idea generators were available)

They got it at their friendly neighborhood Wal*Mart store!

We'll have to wait and see how it goes from there.

Glad you are powered up! ;-)

That Chevron facility is in MS. Also in order for ground water problems to occur, the leak must be over dry land. This was all wet and the product floats.

Water was coming from underground in the French Quarter, under the bricks. The sharks are dying in the streets of NO, so it appears that a lot of the water is fresh water, not salt from the lakes.

How do you clean that much toxic waste? My brothers basement was flooded with city sewage. It took over a year for that clean up, i CAN'T IMAGING AN ENTIRE CITY, COUNTY, PARRISH to clean up, if they can drain the water.

An engineer on FOX said the pumps will have problems because of sand and stuff in the water.

That's cause they had just worked on the darn levee...it wasn't slated for repair cause they thought they had repaired it.

Hundreds gather in hopes of a ride out of New Orleans. New emergencies continued to threaten thousands of refugees, and efforts were underway to evacuate the city. (Carolyn Cole / Los Angeles Times) August 31, 2005

"Anyone seen the video of what looks like Marine One (the President's helicopter) down in the area? "

A few minutes after that clip, they showed another clip (also without commentary) that looked like 41 and 42 in the disaster zone.

FWIW

I'd concur with that. There may be some damage to the refinery from the winds, although nothing seems damaged in that photo, but the water wasn't a problem.

Are you talking about the Canal St. levee? Because if so, I thought that it was the most recently completed levee, supposedly going to stand up a lot better than the previous levees.
