Demagogues: Jesse Jackson was in top form, flying into Caracas to take a cheap shot at Pat Robertson and sing the praises of Hugo Chavez's Venezuela. But amid the huzzahs, something ugly was happening outside.
Seems that Chavez was in top form, too, doing what dictators like his pal Fidel Castro do. Opposition leaders say that while Jackson was visiting over the weekend, Chavez's men sent mobs to ambush about 1,000 peaceful protesters with rocks, bottles and fireworks in downtown Caracas.
Venezuelan media reported nine injured, two seriously. An eyewitness said those hit hardest, and often from behind, were vocal dissidents.
The protesters weren't interested in Robertson's ill-chosen "assassination" remark, with which the Venezuelan government is making so much political hay. They want changes in Chavez's tainted election board so that fair elections can take place.
Somehow, Jimmy Carter's assurances that all's free and fair in Venezuela's electoral system didn't persuade them.

I agree with Rev Robertson
Time to resurrect the ITT group.
Too bad Robertson didn't say the same thing about Jackson.
Hugo (Jesse is tight with Hugo) was happy to make a charitable contribution. After all, Hugo, allong with Fidelito, is going to NYC for the UN session. Hgo wants to sspend some time whoring in Harlem and who better to be on really, really good terms ffor the activity than Rev. Jesse.
No, Jesse and Chavez are tight!
No sweat, after Hugo had slain a million or so innocents, many women and chillins, he will be awarded a Nobel prize or 2. His level of respect in the World Community will rise sharply. Jimmy Carter will praise a fellow traveler. Just watch and wait.
How much attention do you think anyone is paying to Jesse in Venezuela doing his Hugo thing, while everyone in this country is doing the Katrina thing? Methinks nada, zip, none. Jesse and Cindy have faded into oblivion in light of the hurricane news. Good. Something good comes out of something bad. Thank you Katrina for at least one positive aspect of your existence.
There is a reason why in the past our country discouraged people like Jackson's behaviour.
Chavez made the remark that he'd sell gasoline to the American poor at a reduced price. Jackson was there to collect on that promise.
Individuals like Carter and Jackson and even Sheehan are just a much a threat to our national security as Chavez is.
A superb blog, ExpatGuy

"NEW, SOPHISTICATED PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN AIMED AT U.S.
...WHERE MARX MEETS FUNDAMENTALIST ISLAM"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A significant part of the groundwork for Chavez's propaganda offensive can be seen in the visit of Rev. Jessie Jackson's three-day visit to Venezuela in late August. At the end of his sojourn, Jackson publicly took issue with U.S. statements that the Chavez government is a source of "instability" in Latin America, and stated that he found "no evidence" to support U.S. concerns, and urged efforts "to reduce
tensions."
With this declaration, one of the most prominent liberal activists in the U.S. sided with a foreign leader against the official policy of the United States. Rev. Jackson's statements would be read and considered by millions in the U.S., and Chavez could now claim that he and his government have support among some of the power elite in the U.S.
Rev. Jackson and his Rainbow Coalition organization are based in Chicago, which is becoming a center of pro-Chavez activity. Shortly following Rev. Jackson's Venezuelan trip, a last minute contribution from the government of Venezuela and the Venezuelan-controlled Citgo petroleum corporation, enabled Chicago's Puerto Rican Labor Day festival to take place. The City of Chicago and the County of Cook, where Chicago is located, has just concluded an agreement to use voting machines and election machine software produced by a firm with reportedly close connections to the Venezuelan government.
Chicago will also be the starting point on October 13, 2005 for the six-city tour of "Venezuela Matters," a group of "business leaders, musical artists, and academics" accompanied by "empowered Venezuelans" touting the wonders of the Marxist Chavez regime."
