Catholic school to honor pro-abortion official

In 2004, there was the scandal of Loyola University Chicago School of Law, a Catholic institution, giving an award to strongly pro-abortion Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Despite pleas from concerned Christians and even from Francis Cardinal George, Loyola refused to cancel the award.

Well, it seems history is once again repeating itself. The Women's Council of St. Ignatius College Prep, located in the city of Chicago, will have Madigan as their featured speaker at their 7th Annual Women's Council Dinner on September 22, 2005.

Madigan once pledged to close down Illinois crisis pregnancy centers — which she deems "phony" — because they do not offer abortions.

Pro-lifers are urged to contact the president of St. Ignatius College Prep, the Rev. Brian Paulson, S.J., to voice their concerns about the situation. Fr. Paulson's e-mail address is brian.paulson@ignatius.org. (Please be charitable.)

The mission statement of the school is as follows:

"St. Ignatius College Prep, a Jesuit Catholic school in the heart of Chicago, is a diverse community dedicated to educating young men and women for lives of faith, love, service and leadership. Through outstanding teaching and personal formation, the school challenges its talented student body to intellectual excellence, integrity, and life-long learning and growth. Inspired by the gospel of Jesus Christ, this community strives to use God's gifts to promote social justice for the greater glory of God."

The school's website is www.ignatius.org.

For those who reside in the Chicago area, the Pro-Life Action League is planning a protest of the event. The League can be contacted via its website, www.prolifeaction.org.

Catholic "social justice" means killing babies? They really should have a chat to the Pope about that...

well can it really be a "Catholic" institution if it supports someone who supports abortion? I thinketh not.

Perhaps these people need personal letters of Excommunication to get their attention.

A fine idea. Better still, close the school as an example of what happens to anti-Catholic Catholics.

If there is anything that's killing the church it is not the daily persecution from without but the daily disregard for our faith within.

No, it's not a Catholic college - it's a Jesuit college and they haven't been Catholic for years. Long ago, I graduated from both a Jesuit high school and a Jesuit college. I wouldn't let my kids anywhere near them. EVER!

To their shame it goes on in a great many "Catholic" colleges and universities. I think the Cardinal Newman society has become a watch dog over such matters and issues statements to that regard.

So true... The Jesuit who celebrates one of the Sunday masses at my local parish addresses 3 things in his homilies: 1) Condoms (he has an interdisciplinary doctorate in "AIDS theology") 2) Cindy Sheehan and her "prophetic voice" and 3) why the Catholic Church could learn about unity and joy from the Episcopal Church. Utterly ridiculous.

Pope St. Pius X warned Catholics about people like that....they're called Modernists.

How ironic that St. Ignatius Prep will be honoring a pro-abort, since the School was founded by the same man, Father Arnold Damen, who founded Holy Family Parish in Chicago.

About St. Ignatius, Jesuit History

The immigrant families who helped found the parish would be ashamed to see what has happened in their old neighborhood.

I was in Chi-town visiting this summer and visited St. Ignatius, as well as spent a mid-day in front of the Art Institute on Michigan Ave with Joe Schiedler & the Face the Truth Tour. I believe about 7 of his 10 children also went to St. Ignatius.

Joe Scheidler is one outstanding human being. I had a bit to do with him when he visited Australia a few years back. How's he keeping?

I personally would not choose to take sacraments with such a misguided moron as you describe, but I know that in some parts of the country we can't pick and choose. I can only hoper that Pope Benedict will root out these phonies who both carry and spread this infection. Hey, if a Jesuit played chess with an Episcopalian, how could you tell a bishop from a queen?

I emailed Fr. Paulson, president of Ignatius. I'll report his reply.

Joe is indeed a special man, and appears to be as robust and committed as ever. I had long looked forward to meeting this living hero.

Our only Catholic high school in town is Jesuit. Despite the fact that our kids will go to the parish school through 8th grade, they will either go to public school or a non-Catholic private school. I feel bad for my daughter, because many of her friends (from preschool on) will be going there.
