NYP: NARAL'S BIG LIE - the Borking of Roberts disputed by Factcheck.org
New York Post ^ | August 11, 2005 | Editorial

Posted on 08/11/2005 5:27:07 AM PDT by OESY

The Borking of John Roberts has officially begun. And by "borking," we don't mean just ideologically opposing a Supreme Court nominee, but blatantly misrepresenting what he stands for....

The culprit this time is the abortion-rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America. The group has a TV ad that basically accuses Roberts of supporting violence at abortion clinics.

It shows a woman injured in the 1998 bombing of a Birmingham, Ala., clinic — a heinous crime perpetrated by radical anti-abortionist Eric Rudolph that took the life of an off-duty cop.

In the ad, the woman states, "I nearly lost my life." The piece then charges that Roberts filed legal briefs "supporting... a convicted clinic bomber" and declares that his viewpoint "leads him to excuse violence against other Americans."...

In fact, Roberts — while in the Reagan administration — called for the full prosecution of abortion protestors who broke the law.

The briefs referred to in the ad — filed in '91, seven years before the Birmingham bombing — had to do with specific legal argument on how individuals blockading clinics should be prosecuted.

Roberts declared that a federal statute was inappropriate when there were applicable state laws. The Supreme Court upheld Roberts' view.

The deceptiveness of the NARAL ad is so blatant that the Web site Factcheck.org — operated by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania — dispensed with its usual restrained nuanced language in assessing political ads.

Instead, the site says squarely, "The ad is false. [It] misleads when it says Roberts supported a clinic bomber."

That's about as clear-cut as any impartial third party can be in saying the truth: NARAL has crossed the line of political discourse and transparently lied about Roberts' position.

This shows the total desperation of this crowd. They used to be able to get away with these lies. Thanks to the internet and FOX News they are being exposed as the deceitful, manipulating, agents of satan they are.

My guess is that he is simply taking the high road. Eventually, whoever is behind this ad (besides NIMROD) will be brought to light and embarrassed...badly!

The magnitude of this out-right lie is such that it would not be at all out of line for him to call bullsh*t! They are saying that he supports people killing pro-choicers!

BREAKING:  Released Roberts Documents 'Disturbing'...

(AR) Faced with growing pressure from concerned Democrats, the White House reluctantly released more documents to Democratic which may derail Robert's confirmation to the Supreme Court.   Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. said his staff's initial review of the documents was 'quite disturbing'.

Highly regarded Senator Schumer noted a gap of 18 days of missing work from Roberts record.  "This large gap shows Roberts may have skipped key assignments and perhaps was even AWOL," Schumer stated.

GOP responded by spinning the story as 'old news' and not relevant to anything.  Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas desperately pointed out, "for God's sake, this was from kindergarten".

Senator Schumer wisely pointed out, 'but everyone knows kindergarten establishes the foundation of the rest of your education, and if Roberts skipped out of assignments then, how can he be trusted to a lifetime appointment?  This gap raises serious questions about whether Roberts even graduated.'

A spokesperson for NARAL speculated, "those missing 18-days were spent associating with a kid who later married a woman who had a cousin who knew someone involved in an abortion clinic bombing.  This is just another disturbing fact about Roberts that  just keep trickling out.  Roberts is obviously an extremist who supports killing of innocent post embryonic beings."

Congressmen John Conyers stated he plans to hold hearings, as soon as he finds a location he is not locked out of.

An unknown conservative group never before quoted in the main stream media before, drew huge media coverage by withdrawing their support for Roberts, illustrating wide spread bi-partisan opposition to Roberts.

CBS 60 Minutes memo department is busily obtaining vintage 1950's typewriters off e-bay in preparation for their upcoming damaging expose.  Insiders at CBS said, "Our story is not going to be shot down by some pajama-clad blogger this time."

Calls to Roberts office were not returned.

...and embarrassed...badly!

I wish but when has any dishonest, fabricated or corrupt act embarrassed anyone on the left? Why would it nobody reports on it, it just goes away.

Sean had a guy on from NARAL yesterday. He kept claiming the ad was true. After all, why let the facts stand in the way?

No, because it doesn't have Willie Horton or the Swift Boat Vets in it.

In any case, the most they'll ever say is that they're "troubled by the rhetoric both sides have descended to on this most sensitive issue of privacy."

I agree...but frankly, these b*st*rds have already been defeated via simple fact checking. He needn't say anything bc its already been said.

Right now NARAL just looks like a confused and ashamed puppy waddling around after biting someone.
