War Protester Cindy Sheehan Says She Won't Pay 2004 Taxes, Dares Government to Go After Her
Monday, August 8, 2005 | Kristinn

Cindy Sheehan, who is protesting the Iraq war by staging a vigil in Crawford, Texas demanding to have a meeting with President Bush to have him explain why her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, was killed in the war last year is reported to have made recent pronouncements that she is refusing to pay her taxes because of her son's death in the war.

In a Providence Journal article about an appearance by Sheehan at a Rhode Island church published July 27, 2005, reporter Elizabeth Gudrais wrote:

For one thing, Sheehan said, she has stopped paying her taxes. "I didn't pay my taxes for 2004," she said. When a letter arrives declaring her payment delinquent, she said, "I'll say no -- I don't owe you a penny. We'll see what they do to me."

Last Friday, Sheehan gave a speech in Dallas, Texas at the Veterans for Peace conference. According to a published transcript, Sheehan said the following:

Another thing that I’m doing is - - my son was killed in 2004, so I’m not paying my taxes for 2004. If I get a letter from the IRS, I’m gonna say, you know what, this war is illegal; this is why this war is illegal. This war is immoral; this is why this war is immoral. You killed my son for this. I don’t owe you anything. And if I live to be a million, I won’t owe you a penny.

And I want them to come after me, because unlike what you’ve been doing with the war resistance, I want to put this frickin’ war on trial. And I want to say, “You give me my son, and I’ll pay your taxes.”

Also in the VFP speech, Sheehan is quoted as describing her state of mind as being quite dangerous:

So anyway that filth-spewer and warmonger, George Bush was speaking after the tragedy of the marines in Ohio, he said a couple things that outraged me. Seriously outraged me. And I know I don’t look like I’m outraged, I’m always so calm and everything, that’s because if I started hitting something, I wouldn’t stop ‘til it was dead. So I can’t even start, cause I know how dangerous that would be, but George Bush was talking, and he never mentioned the terrible incident of those marines, but he did say, that the families of the ones who have been killed can rest assured that their loved ones died for a noble cause.

Since beginning her roadside vigil about five miles from the President's ranch on Saturday, Sheehan has claimed she has been threatened by the Secret Service with being run over by speeding cars, and with being threatened with arrest by state officials for being a national security threat.

Sheehan has met once with President Bush, in June of last year at Ft. Lewis, Wash. She has given conflicting accounts of that meeting.

Last Saturday, two high level officials with the Bush administration met with her at her roadside vigil to hear her grievances.

Sheehan was not satisfied and has promised to stay in Crawford until she meets with the President. She says she'll follow him back to Washington, D.C. if he completes his August vacation without meeting her.

You know, I'm morally opposed to war. However, I'm even more morally opposed to sitting around and doing nothing while others are being enslaved and murdered. I'm also more morally opposed to sitting around and doing nothing while tyrants attempt to enslave and/or murder me or my loved ones.

Sometimes one has to make a choice among those things to which one is morally opposed.

Vacaville/Solano County is just above the SF Bay so I doubt that she is a dean at the USC Law School. But who knows? The way people move around in California...

I don't believe her son was married. If he elected "by law" then would not she receive it?

Frankly, I'm not sure, now. I know in 2001/2002 -- immediate family (wives, husbands, childrens) were recipients of the basic (paid for by the military) ins policy. And that if you wished, to include others outside the immediate, you had to purchase a wee bit (yourself) of insurance.

We are talking about his mother getting his insurance benefits, right?

It's possible the "insurance" naming on core-basic military supplied "benefits" has changed since when. But, the extra "policy" purchase -- it's a little bit for a substantial payoff in occurrence of death. Can't help ya, here, with solid knowledge on the current situation.

Well I'll tell you fine folks what *I* think will happen to Cindy Sheehan, when she finally realizes that she has arrived at Minute 16 (after using up her 15 minutes), and that nobody is going to pay her any more attention, when the IRS just treats her like any non-filer, and the cameras and microphones have moved on to more current events, she will decide that only by taking her own life, will she draw the world's attention to her cause, and I predict that she will show up either outside of the Crawford Ranch of President Bush, or perhaps at the White House gate (if she can manage it), and she will proceed to pour gasoline all over herself and then light the match, in a nostalgic emulation of the immolation that a handful of Buddhist Vietnamese monks engaged in, way back in old Saigon, and like those monks learned (albeit too late), it won't make a tinker's damn worth of difference.

Hey Cindy? Can we call you CINDERrella?

"she will proceed to pour gasoline all over herself and then light the match"

She doesn't have the balls for that. More likely she'll just eat a bottle of sleeping pills or something cowardly like that.

Cindy Sheehan has gone around the bend.

She's making mistake after mistake and it's going to
cost her, the IRS sheds no tears.

It would be great,if the Bush administration listed the terrorists that have been killed in Iraq, and their role in terror. Then put the terrorist that was on TV recently next to Ted Kennedy and the Shi-t that comes out of his mouth.Their words are the same. Then asked who is protecting Americans and who is helping the terrorists? This women is a nut case,I have no pity for her.I am sick of this ,Republicans better speak out because the uninformed public believes that shi_!!

Could this be something as simple as making enough of a fuss that the IRS would back off, not wishing to be charged with political revenge?

It seems odd to me that she is ranting about taxes and telling them to come get her, when she knows she owes a bunch of back taxes.

Being the pragmatic person that I am, I think that she is using this whole thing to avoid being jailed for tax avoidance.

Strangely, terrorists killed her son and she just can't find it in her heart to blame them. I guess you don't get attention blaming terrorists for killing people anymore.

She'a just a pawn in someone's game. She'll wake up in prison and say "Wait a minute".

That's very possible - I worked with someone who filed bogus sexual harassment charges against another co-worker to avoid being fired for incompetence/attendance issues. He kept his job for another six months.
