War Protester Cindy Sheehan Says She Won't Pay 2004 Taxes, Dares Government to Go After Her

Cindy Sheehan, who is protesting the Iraq war by staging a vigil in Crawford, Texas demanding to have a meeting with President Bush to have him explain why her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, was killed in the war last year is reported to have made recent pronouncements that she is refusing to pay her taxes because of her son's death in the war.

In a Providence Journal article about an appearance by Sheehan at a Rhode Island church published July 27, 2005, reporter Elizabeth Gudrais wrote:

For one thing, Sheehan said, she has stopped paying her taxes. "I didn't pay my taxes for 2004," she said. When a letter arrives declaring her payment delinquent, she said, "I'll say no -- I don't owe you a penny. We'll see what they do to me."

Last Friday, Sheehan gave a speech in Dallas, Texas at the Veterans for Peace conference. According to a published transcript, Sheehan said the following:

Another thing that I’m doing is - - my son was killed in 2004, so I’m not paying my taxes for 2004. If I get a letter from the IRS, I’m gonna say, you know what, this war is illegal; this is why this war is illegal. This war is immoral; this is why this war is immoral. You killed my son for this. I don’t owe you anything. And if I live to be a million, I won’t owe you a penny.

And I want them to come after me, because unlike what you’ve been doing with the war resistance, I want to put this frickin’ war on trial. And I want to say, “You give me my son, and I’ll pay your taxes.”

Also in the VFP speech, Sheehan is quoted as describing her state of mind as being quite dangerous:

So anyway that filth-spewer and warmonger, George Bush was speaking after the tragedy of the marines in Ohio, he said a couple things that outraged me. Seriously outraged me. And I know I don’t look like I’m outraged, I’m always so calm and everything, that’s because if I started hitting something, I wouldn’t stop ‘til it was dead. So I can’t even start, cause I know how dangerous that would be, but George Bush was talking, and he never mentioned the terrible incident of those marines, but he did say, that the families of the ones who have been killed can rest assured that their loved ones died for a noble cause.

Since beginning her roadside vigil about five miles from the President's ranch on Saturday, Sheehan has claimed she has been threatened by the Secret Service with being run over by speeding cars, and with being threatened with arrest by state officials for being a national security threat.

Sheehan has met once with President Bush, in June of last year at Ft. Lewis, Wash. She has given conflicting accounts of that meeting.

Last Saturday, two high level officials with the Bush administration met with her at her roadside vigil to hear her grievances.

Sheehan was not satisfied and has promised to stay in Crawford until she meets with the President. She says she'll follow him back to Washington, D.C. if he completes his August vacation without meeting her.

It is really sad to see this happening to a mother of a fallen American soldier who gave his life to save his countrymen.

Cindy Sheehan is being goaded and aided by anti-American leftists who are using her for their own ends. Yes, she was a Bush-hater before her son died, but since being latched on to by Military Families Speak Out and other groups like Veterans for Peace and Code Pink, Cindy Sheehan has gone around the bend.

".."I didn't pay my taxes for 2004," she said..."

Lol! That won't work!

I thought liberals liked taxes. It's ok, I'm sure Daily Kos will demand that we pay Cindy Sheehan's taxes for her, by rolling back the "tax cuts for the rich."

the Veterans for Peace

Last time I checked, there weren't too many veterans for war. The group is misnamed. It should be called Surrender Advocates.

"For one thing, Sheehan said, she has stopped paying her taxes. "I didn't pay my taxes for 2004," she said.

I suspect this is hot air. Does she own her business or does she work for someone. If she worked for someone then she had payroll deductions and probably qualified for a refund.

I think this is more disinformation baloney.

Judging by her mindset and behaviour, she probably doesn't (or didn't) hold a job in 2004 that would have paid more than $30,000/year so she wouldn't pay taxes anyway.

This year is different, no doubt thanks to whatever large sum of money she's been paid by leftist groups/George Soros to pull a 180 on her story.

Well... I don't like to pay my taxes either, because I believe the government and the state of Illinois are wasting too much money on subsidies. But the law is the law.

I am sorry for the loss of her son, but this broad is crazy. (or is that phrased too much like the libs favorite conundrum "I support our troops, but I am against the war"????)

No matter, may her son rest in peace. He made the ultimate sacrifice for his country...so his mother, and others, could retain their freedom of speech.

It just don't work like that, hon.

Cindy, darlin', you had best prepare to see your bank accounts siezed and your home sold at auction by folks who REALLY don't care.

But the law is the law.

Nah, I think we've reached the point in America where we can choose what laws we want to obey and what laws we don't want to obey.

The federal US government has led by example by failing to secure the borders of the United States of America.

Don't you have enough immigration threads to whine on or must you try to hijack ones totally unrelated?

this is getting some momentum. She has the right to do what she is doing....even though it does nothing to "stop the war".

I don't like what she is doing, but she is determined to be the poster girl for this cause. The DUmmies are fired up and I am saddened to believe that this is going to be a bigger story pretty damn soon.

It will be interesting, and sad, to watch this play out

We all feel your pain, lady. But have some goddamn dignity.

Your son joined the military voluntarily and died during a war that freed MILLIONS of people from tyranny. When did the left decide freeing people from dictators was a bad idea? Even if you think Bush has other motives can't the freeing of millions be embraced? I guess not.

It's this kind of crap that has facilitated many in the center to vote Republican. Even if you disagree with both parties, the Dems/left is just extremely misguided at this point.

That is all.

Hey, if we put the IRS and the DC meter maids in charge of securing the borders, we'd never see another illegal in the country again. ;-)
