War Protester Cindy Sheehan Says She Won't Pay 2004 Taxes, Dares Government to Go After Her
Monday, August 8, 2005 | Kristinn

Cindy Sheehan, who is protesting the Iraq war by staging a vigil in Crawford, Texas demanding to have a meeting with President Bush to have him explain why her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, was killed in the war last year is reported to have made recent pronouncements that she is refusing to pay her taxes because of her son's death in the war.

In a Providence Journal article about an appearance by Sheehan at a Rhode Island church published July 27, 2005, reporter Elizabeth Gudrais wrote:

For one thing, Sheehan said, she has stopped paying her taxes. "I didn't pay my taxes for 2004," she said. When a letter arrives declaring her payment delinquent, she said, "I'll say no -- I don't owe you a penny. We'll see what they do to me."

Last Friday, Sheehan gave a speech in Dallas, Texas at the Veterans for Peace conference. According to a published transcript, Sheehan said the following:

Another thing that I’m doing is - - my son was killed in 2004, so I’m not paying my taxes for 2004. If I get a letter from the IRS, I’m gonna say, you know what, this war is illegal; this is why this war is illegal. This war is immoral; this is why this war is immoral. You killed my son for this. I don’t owe you anything. And if I live to be a million, I won’t owe you a penny.

And I want them to come after me, because unlike what you’ve been doing with the war resistance, I want to put this frickin’ war on trial. And I want to say, “You give me my son, and I’ll pay your taxes.”

Also in the VFP speech, Sheehan is quoted as describing her state of mind as being quite dangerous:

So anyway that filth-spewer and warmonger, George Bush was speaking after the tragedy of the marines in Ohio, he said a couple things that outraged me. Seriously outraged me. And I know I don’t look like I’m outraged, I’m always so calm and everything, that’s because if I started hitting something, I wouldn’t stop ‘til it was dead. So I can’t even start, cause I know how dangerous that would be, but George Bush was talking, and he never mentioned the terrible incident of those marines, but he did say, that the families of the ones who have been killed can rest assured that their loved ones died for a noble cause.

Since beginning her roadside vigil about five miles from the President's ranch on Saturday, Sheehan has claimed she has been threatened by the Secret Service with being run over by speeding cars, and with being threatened with arrest by state officials for being a national security threat.

Sheehan has met once with President Bush, in June of last year at Ft. Lewis, Wash. She has given conflicting accounts of that meeting.

Last Saturday, two high level officials with the Bush administration met with her at her roadside vigil to hear her grievances.

Sheehan was not satisfied and has promised to stay in Crawford until she meets with the President. She says she'll follow him back to Washington, D.C. if he completes his August vacation without meeting her.

I thought it was a White House meeting. Now it's a Fort Lewis meeting. How many times is her story going to change? (purely rhetoric question)

being friends with a terrorist sympathizer/promoter? This is so much worse than a grieving, Bush hating mother.

You put it in a nut shell, no pun intended.

"Liberal Narcissistic Martyrdom"

Exactly.

Thanks. This is what I've always thought also.

It's about ego and narcissism and being a martyr. It's never about dealing with any kind of pragmatic reality.

Personally I think these people are all traitors and hate their own country no matter what they say. It's all about ME, ME, ME.

Legitimate dissent is one thing, treason, perfidy and disloyalty is another.

I had that impression too and determined that it was an assumption on my part. There is no doubt that this woman has done a 180 on the actual meeting though. She has no shame. She's one among about 1800 mothers who are greiving, but the other 1799 seem to have some sense of sanity. She appears to have gone totally looney, and the MSM is feeding off it.

"Legitimate dissent is one thing, treason, perfidy and disloyalty is another."

Legitimate dissent is one thing. "Everyone who disagrees with me is a Nazi, and I'm a heroic rebel martyr" is something else entirely.

Hmmm... Methinks the tax problem came before the decision to become a war protester.

I hope the Left and the MSM feeding frenzy drives her crazy to the point where they sap every ounce of emotional turmoil, guilt and horror that they can blackmail out of Americans... so that the drama's cathartic stage would kick in and America can say to itself, "Thanks, I feel much better now. Wasn't that performance something else! I'm hungry... where can you get a good burger around here?"

The words "Nazi" and "racist" are way overused today. They've become knee jerk and parroted cliche's and evasions of cogent thought and responses.

It's so easy to use those terms and name call someone that.

The poster who responded already is right: Depends upon whom was named Beneficiary. The benefits go automatically to the immediate family -- wives, husbands, children. For a parent (of military) to receive benefits -- enlisted would have had to have specifically named that person, and also possibly taken out extra insurance. As I understood, each soldier has a basic policy; to name someone outside the immediate nuclear (his/her own spouse/offspring) family -- extra insurance acquisition is required.

If that were my mother and I was in heaven looking down, I would want just one person with a kind heart who could persuade her to rest and keep her away from the cameras and the MSM.

I couldn't agree more with you. That's what folks who love you do, when you are in grief: They love you and keep you from hurting yourself. The left is not doing that for her. I have been and continue to keep this mother in my prayers. Even tho I know she has no desire to hear a word I have to say. She wishes only to hear her echo chamber chorus. And stay stuck in grief and misplaced, misdirected anger.

Thats right Cindy. They won't be able to touch you after all,... you feel really strongly about this and what could possibly matter more than your feelings on the issue? The piddly IRS doesn't stand a chance against such strong emotion. And if they send you to prison for 10 or 12 years, then it's a small price to pay. Just think of how stupid George Bush will look when he's retired and working on his memoirs while you're getting your third cavity search of the day and "enjoying" your delousing with the other girls.

Don't worry it won't be so bad, and if it helps keep Air America going for an extra 3 months then it'll all be worth it.

Yes, the hairs on the back of my neck rose when I read about her tax liens, and a name listed on those tax liens with her. There's something else afoot in the agenda of the left, I think...

Agree with your post. Not only is this deranged woman being a useful tool of the left but the media is loving it. It's past time for the media to realize she is seriously nutso and drop her from their radar. But being the media, they are hoping to have a camera on her when she makes that final jump.
Like you, I am sick of her and find her and her maladjusted moonbat group to be repulsive.

I don't think she'd blow herself up to get Bush, but I can see her trying to fling herself out on the road to block his motorcade.

At which point she'd get the psychiatric help she so obviously needs.
