BAY MINETTE -- Baldwin County sheriff's deputies arrested at least four men in the final hours of a countywide curfew issued to keep residents safe during Hurricane Dennis and while many homeowners remained away from the county in the storm's wake, authorities said Tuesday.
The men were first spotted shortly before 11 p.m. Monday in a farming area near Baldwin County 49, just north of Gulf Shores, according to sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John Murphy and a Baldwin County jail official.
Deputies patrolling the area noticed flashing lights in a field and set up a surveillance, Murphy said.
The men tried to leave the scene in a vehicle, but were quickly stopped by deputies, according to Murphy.
On Saturday, Baldwin County Sheriff James B. "Jimmy" Johnson issued a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew for unincorporated areas of the county.
The curfew, lifted at 5 a.m. Tuesday, was set primarily to ward off trespassers and looters, Murphy said. While the hurricane made landfall Sunday afternoon, the curfew remained active to protect those who had left the area, he said.
"We're not trying to affect anyone who is a homeowner," Murphy said. "The intention was to protect the homeowners and property owners from anyone doing any illegal activity while they were not home."
Since the arrests Monday night, deputies have learned the men were gathering mushrooms in the field, Murphy said.
Leonard Stacy Edmonds, 40, of Gulf Shores, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and violation of curfew.
Three men were charged with public intoxication and violation of curfew. They are James Wendell Wright, 37, and Richard Allen Fiser, 41, both of Gulf Shores; and Gavin Neal Buras, 42, of La Combe, La.
All four men were released from the Baldwin County Corrections Center on Tuesday morning on $1,000 bond each, according to a jail official. They could additionally face trespassing charges, Murphy said.
Police in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, which also issued individual curfews before, during and after the storm, said they had not arrested anyone on curfew violation charges.
On Monday afternoon, the sheriff's office issued a news release that said no evacuated homes or businesses had been burglarized.
Hee, hee.
What the he!! was in those mushrooms? Concerned citizens want to know!
Badger badger badger badger badger mushroom mushroom...
They were noticed at 11pm and scooped up shortly thereafter. So they claim to be collecting mushrooms in the darkness. Normally the edible mushrooms are not that visible, even with a flashlight. Something does not add.

Psilosybin - a milder cousin of LSD. Several grams will show you how the American Indians got design ideas for making blankets.
During the 2000 election, every Democrat in the county government was voted out of office. There are no elected Democrats anywhere in the county government.
