Kumbaya or The Battle Hymn of the Republic?

“He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat.” Those are two lines of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic“. Do they describe the current bunch of Republicans in Congress?

As the Democrats continue to be mired in their out-of-power position, they have become more shrill, more audacious, more “in your face”. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois even compared our service people holding enemy combatants in Guantanamo to Hitler, Pol Pot, etc. He is unrepentant, but this is usual for the leftists.

The Democrat Party was at one time liberal, counting as leaders Hubert Humphrey and Harry Truman. True liberals in the South recoiled from the usurped party’s attacks on family values and defected, thus ensuring the solid South being colored conservative red. The Democrat Party succumbed to the aggressiveness of the leftists and deserves to be called that today, as a means of simplifying the labels.

Speaking of labels, because even liberalism has been discredited, liberals/leftists prefer to be called Progressives. Progressive is far from accurate, as they embrace fascism, socialism and communism, which are outdated and failed systems of government Sincere conservatives should never let that tag pass their lips again when referring to the left.

Leftists realize they are in a war and use whatever weapons it takes to win a battle. They are patient and know they can lose many battles but must win the final one. Conservatives, on the other hand, sense they are only in a cultural war and strive to hold onto a moral structure.

Recognizing the true enemy, leftists are working hard to get every sign of traditional religion out of public life, striving to replace it with their own, which is secular humanism. Knowing that the traditional family and religion usually go together, the family is their primary target.

We have just seen a preview of the “mother of all confirmations”, the advancement of a Supreme Court justice, which could be imminent. The Democrats warmed up with Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas, They unleashed a scurrilous attack on Thomas’ morals. They know the drill; “Bork” the nominee.

In contrast, after this outrageous performance, the Republicans couldn’t have been more genteel in sending Ruth Bader-Ginsburg to the Supreme Court. No embarrassing questions were asked, such as: “Do you think you could be impartial in the ACLU’s actions before the court because you sat on their board of directors and litigated for them for six or seven years before that same court?”

Democrats who whined that Justice Scalia should recuse himself in any case involving Dick Cheney because Scalia and Cheney went on a duck hunting outing, look the other way from Bader-Ginsburg’s blatant conflict of interest. Since the ACLU is either a prime pleader or “friend of the court” often and appears regularly, Bader-Ginsburg would not be seeing much action if she were required to so recuse herself.

Leftists like to advance the fiction that they are bipartisan. However, they are only bipartisan when they are out of power. In the decades when they held the Congress and presidency, bipartisan was not in their vocabulary. In fact, did anyone hear that word before they lost power?

In the latest bid for confirmation of judges, some so-called moderate Republicans created a bipartisan charade by brokering a deal with Democrats, which effectively set the precedent that Democrats could count on the “Wobblies”, Republicans who are always reluctant team players. The “Wobblies” never suffer retribution after giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

Eyebrows were raised when Newt GIngrich cozied up to Hillary Clinton in an announcement that they were studying the health care problem. Perhaps Newt remembers that when the Democrats threw the ethics charges at him and were circling, his tribe was cowering in the shadows, after laying down their spears. If the New York Times puts a scarlet letter on your forehead, you need all the help you can get from your allies. Ask Trent Lott. Ask Tom DeLay. Republicans should never fear any ethics probes, however, if they control Congress, since Democrats will always outdo them in breaking or stretching the law.

Will Republicans some day “nice” themselves to death? The question remains: will it be “Kumbaya” or “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” that inspires and guides the Republicans in the tough battles ahead?

I sure would like to hear any theories about why the Republican party lacks strong serious leadership in Congress. For what was supposed to be the complete takeover of the government by conservatives it's hard to find more than a handful of conservative leaders with balls or backbones. They barely stand up for their own much less go on the offensive against leftists. And don't even get me stating on holding "moderates" accountable for their actions. There has got to be an explanation for this phenomenon. Is there some unseen force that sanctions such actions or lack thereof as the case may be? Is there something in the party machinery that filters out strong-willed assertive conservatives before they can even get elected? Or is it simply the nature of politics today? Just do whatever you gotta do to keep yourself on the gravy train and pay only lip service to constituents?

I think it's a desire to appeal to "moderates" (Read: Liberals who want to win elections)and be "Nice guys" that has caused the GOP to forget how to fight at times. Thus we wind up with guys like Voinovich and McLame setting the agenda.
