MEADVILLE, Pa. - A man was accidentally killed by a sledgehammer his son-in-law was swinging at a bat that had flown into the home they shared, police said.
Francis V. Mercier, 66, of East Mead Township, was hit in the head Friday by the three-pound hammer as his son-in-law, D. J. Delancey, was trying to kill the animal with it.
Delancey and his wife had moved into Mercier's home a few years ago, neighbors said.
Delancey accidentally struck Mercier, who was standing behind him, about 1 a.m. Friday, police said.
Results of an autopsy performed Saturday were not immediately available. But police and Crawford County Coroner Patrick McHenry said the death appeared to be an accident.

Chasing a bat with a 3-pound sledgehammer? The wrong part of the gene pool got snuffed out here, I think! Of course, standing near a guy swinging such an item isn't too bright, either, I guess.
Don't these people have anything smaller than a 3-pounder? Like maybe a broom.

Very tragic, Swinging a sledge to a bat is not the way to do it. just open the doors and brush it out with a broom or something, or call someone that can deal with it.
Makes me wonder though... it was the son in law...;)

Sledgehammers must be added (along with kitchen knives) to the list of dangerous weapons that should be banned from common use. (/sarcasm off)

Why do I suspect alcohol factors somewhere into this story?

Maybe they lived in a real bad neighborhood, and he was swinging the sledgehammer at a baseball bat that had been thrown into the room.

Why do I have the suspicion that alcohol was involved?

Oh yeah, a big ol' slow sledgehammer is the weapon of choice for bat hunting...uh-huh. The only problem is that the wrong guy died. The true moron may yet pass his genes on.

The bat may have been smarter than the two combined. Or maybe it was just sober.

I caught a bat I didn't even know was in my mountain cabin. I had put up a sticky fly catcher and the bat got tangled in it & died. Too bad about the bat too. They catch a great many bugs, and we have wanted to attract the bats for that purpose.
As for the article, I'm sorry for the man who was killed. What kind of idiot used a 3 lb sledge to go after a bat?
