My son just called from Afghanistan....

Posted on 05/17/2005 11:51:18 AM PDT by mikebake

I have posted a few times before; my son is a Marine stationed at a primitive firebase in eastern Afghanistan. They conduct constant missions rooting out insurgents along the Pakistani border; he has been there for about 8 months, due to leave there mid-June for a break, then possibly to Iraq. Today I got a call from him at my work; never had him do that. Satellite phone, big time delay............."Just wanted to see how everyone is......." he says. Some more pleasantries, and then my son, who has never been too vocal about current events or politics, says that the small town they are near has experienced major rioting, and a military truck in a convoy was blown up (no fatality), the formerly hospitable townsfolk were stoning them as they passed, and the damage to the general climate between them has become very bad. He was quite angry and felt betrayed by Newsweek and other media, and singled out USA Today for inflicting similar harm over time. Just his words, not mine, out of the blue today, at my work. Surprising.

You need to get this to someone with a big microphone. Possibly someone at Fox or the MSM

Tell your story t FOX News and then asked FOX to notify you 2 hours before they air the story so you can contact Newsweak, CBS, NYT in a conference call.

Ask the 3 later MSM folk if they'd like to see the US capture Osama? Then tell them your story.

Yes, I agree...this has to get out beyond FR. Make a call to Linda Vester or John Gibson at FOX. They are outspoken in their support of our troops. David Asman is another good one to call.

Get it to Sean or Tony.

I agree. This must be broadcast nationwide. I'd call Rush Limbaugh, too.

I'm so sorry your son and other brave fighting men have suffered because of our irresponsible, anti-American media. Please tell him how many of us ordinary citizens are grateful every day for their sacrifices, and that we're cheering them on all the way.

Please thank your son on my behalf for serving his country.

I just read an article that suggested that people who are angry at newsweek over this are really giving militant islam a pass. The writer of this particular artcile suggested that such people are smug, delusional conservatives. Then I read your post and it further emboldened my point of view that this journalist is simply afraid of his new boss (you, me, and everyone with a computer and a brain) and is having trouble coping with reality.

Thank you for sharing your son's message and again, please thank your son for his service.

I don't believe I ever subscribed to Newsweak.

I did subscribe to Time when I was young, but cancelled that subscription maybe twenty years ago, out of disgust with their biased reporting.

Nowadays, I get most of my news off the Internet. I still do subscribe to National Review (which has gone downhill some, but is still occasionally good), and US News & World Report (mostly because of John Leo, and also because they occasionally have good financial articles).

I will say a prayer for your son. Defending America is a noble cause, and the LameStream, leftist, socialist, anti-freedom PRESS and Democrats (many of them anyway) and leftwingnuts like Moore and Soros, etc. are doing their best to put down America.

Prayers said.

After reading your note, my first thought was God Bless your son. Now I see that it is other Freepers' thought as well.

I hope you can get wide distribution of your son's obserfations and comments.

Wasn't capturing Osama what all these lib-elites have been clamoring for since 2002? Did the Newsweek editors think that their article and constant anti-military slant was helping your son's mission?

I've always had a low regard for Newsweek and the rest of the MSM. But really, if people in Afghanistan are so primitive in their thoughts, and if their appreciation for the U.S. is so shallow, then something would have set them off eventually.

Maybe the Muslim world has so much barbarism (and so little intelligence) that the people there can never grow up and act civilized.
