Syria launched a military build up on its Iraq border after the American Army began a wide-ranging military operation in a region in Iraq near the Syrian border.

Eyewitnesses in this area reported that they heard canon, warplane and bombing sounds coming from Al Kaim Township and its surroundings.

Local inhabitants reported that Syrian armored vehicles went to the border region with soldiers in them. Eyewitnesses noted that the tension in the region is quite high, and they added that they are anxious due to heavy American bombardment in the Ak Kaim region and Husayba Town.

That's it...mess with the country that's taken over half the Middle East in a couple years while losing less than 2,000 people. Smart, really smart.

Maybe a stray PGM will go across the border and take out a tank or three!

Does Assad think his army is good for more than tormenting syrians and lebanese? Massing his troops near the border only makes it easier for our operational planners. Massed Syrian troops should reduce conflict time by several weeks.

Good. Now Assad can make good on his supposed promise to Condi, POTUS, DoS, and DoD, that he will do a better job of finding and capturing all flavors of the insurgents within his borders. He (Assad) had one of his top Intel Generals, forget the jokers name, sit down with Collin Powell way back when and come up with an agreement as to what Syrian Intel and Army would do to keep foreign terrorist from entering Iraq. And this is ancient news, so I cannot provide URLs.

I have harped on this issue within Iraqi threads for about four months or so after those ancient, news aritcles where made public that Assad would do his best.
Lets sae what his game is currently, as if we didn't know.

It's good the Syrians put their troops on the border, now if more armed terrorists come across we can just take out the whole border station. I am convinced that some of those troops the Marines took out were Syrians or trained in Syrian terrorists camps.

One should be careful in assuming the cause of events, especially in a regime as long standing as the Syrians. It is equally likely that the Syrian armor column is a unit that has just evacuated Lebanon, is trying it's best to find Damascus and is lost. Keep in mind the quality of the Syrian Bathist officer corps. If left unmolested they could very well transit Iraq and not stop until they reach the Indian Ocean.

Time to go after Syria. They are nothing compared to Iraq, and it will actually reduce the strength of the insurgency since many insurgents plot their attacks in Syria. With Syria liberated, we can send supplies through Israel and build an oil pipeline through Israel and Syria to Iraq.

Poor bastards can't sleep at night due to the bombardment? Well a lot of us here in the U.S. haven't slept too well since 9-11.
Hopefully some buck private in the syrian army shoots and starts a slaughter by the American troops that spills over into Damascus.

Yes, this has already happened on a few occasions. Two events which have since been made public (but not discussed in much detail).

One event involved US SOF engaging a number of fleeing Iraqi vehicles - US SOF engaged Syrian forces across the border killing two of them and wounding several others (of which we treated back at a US base then returned them to Syria).
