WASHINGTON (AP) -- Break out the cigars. The Treasury ducklings are hatching.

The brown mallard duck, which became Washington's newest tourist attraction a block away from the White House, began hatching her ducklings Saturday afternoon.

For the curious tourists gathered around her enclosure, there wasn't a lot of activity to see because the hatching was occurring underneath her.

"The brown mallard duck"

Does the writer think they come in other colors? All mallard hens are brown. If it wasn't it wouldn't be a mallard.

And yes, mallards are good eatin' ducks. There are thourands around here right now, green headed drakes in every water filled ditch and puddle two or three per hen trying to get her attention.

In the forties my niece was given a baby duck for Easter.
She was found at a pan of water with a death grip around the poor ducklings neck.
She was saying "Swim ducky swim and fly ducky fly".

My niece turned out okay but I wonder how she would have turned out watching TV and had parents who spared the rod.
