Rooney Rhymes with Looney - (funny as all get-out piece on Andy Rooney!)
CHRONWATCH.COM ^ | APRIL 16, 2005 | BURT PRELUTSKY

Seeing as how I am one of the plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit targeting several Hollywood entities – studios, networks and talent agencies – for engaging in discriminatory practices against older writers, I’d have to be the worst sort of rat to suggest that it’s high time that CBS sent Andy Rooney packing. So I won’t suggest they retire him because he’s old. Instead, I’ll suggest they give him his gold watch because he’s really stupid.

Clearly, in Rooney’s case, it isn’t a matter of age. His little screeds on “60 Minutes” have been boring and embarrassing for many years. Oddly enough, when I used to watch the show regularly, I didn’t notice it quite so much. I sort of got used to how truly awful he was. It’s sort of like living with a harmless, but nevertheless crazy, relative. When you’re around him all the time, you get used to his shenanigans. But go away for a while and then come back, and the fact that Uncle Sid shoves mashed potatoes in his ears will hit you like a ton of bricks.

So it is with Uncle Andy. Recently, after not having watched “60 Minutes” for a couple of months, I tuned in. By the time 8 p.m. finally rolled around, I found myself wondering if anyone at CBS is paying any attention to Rooney’s commentaries.

He began by admitting that he, whom we all know to be a millionaire, drives 20 miles into New Jersey to buy gas because their state tax is slightly lower than New York’s, and then wondered, as he chuckled, whether he was actually saving any money.

Bad enough, but it got worse. He went on to insist that the rest of us should all vow to drive 20% less in 2005, so that we wouldn’t have to make “a mess in Alaska.”

The real mess is obviously between Rooney’s ears.

Every single time this loon fills up his gas tank, he’s driving an extra 40 miles to save a few pennies, but the rest of us are supposed to stop driving to the supermarket?!

All of which only proves once again that there’s no self-righteous hypocrite like a wealthy, self-righteous, liberal hypocrite.

And to prove that this has absolutely nothing to do with age, when Andy Rooney, 85, is retired to pasture, I very much want him to take Lesley Stahl, a mere child of 63, along for company.

He may be a loon, but I think he's also a bald-faced liar. It costs at least $5.00 to get from NYC to NJ because of bridge and tunnel tolls, so unless his car has a 50 gallon tank he's in the red on that score alone. Add to that the fact that one doesn't just bop over to North Jersey on a lark (at any given moment one can run into stalled traffic that holds you up for hours) and I think Uncle Andy's full of BS. Nothing new there.

Rooney always bugged me whenever I watched 60 minutes. Someone gave me a book by him once. I remember thinking after reading some of his work that he is smug, biased, arrogant - just plain unappealing. I would not like to be in the same room with that guy.

I can't help but think that he probably fits right in with the rest of the 60 minutes folks in front of and behind the cameras. Giant egos, cocksure of themselves on any given issue, and usually dead wrong about everything. A bunch of rich liberals, living in their insulated world, thinking that they know how the rest of us should live.

Liberals love taxes for other people, but when they have to pay them it's all very different.

A couple of months? That's all it take to build up an immunization. I seriously have not seen 60 minutes since about 1997 or 1998, give or take a couple of hours. The only way I knew it was still on the air is that people keep posting looney rooney stuff on FR.

Based on personal experience my thought precisely. Further, I may be wrong ... but doesn't Rooney live in CT?

I thought that he was just a meat puppet - a human ventriloquist's dummy. This begs the question: who has their hand up where the sun doesn't shine?

You may be right; many of the media high-and-mighty live up there. Except for the right-wingers like Hannity and Bo Snerdley, who live in NJ. Well at least Snerdley used to live there.

Makes Rooney's statement even more unbelievable.

Maybe he has his chauffer drive the car a minimum of two hours (each way) to get from southern CT to north Jersey to fill up. Yeah, right.

Oh, and I forgot. You don't have to pay to get out of NYC to NJ, but you do have to pay to go the other way.

There are ways to get from southern CT to NJ without going through NYC at all, but they still involve significant tolls.

Rooney drives? I wouldn't let him drive a hot wheel car on a soccer field.

What a great comment! I agree completely. He makes this stuff up in his CBS office, which most certainly isn't that cramped, old fashioned, rumpled little corner like a hole-in-a-wall that is his set for the show.

......and, next time, Steely Tom, tell us what you really think!!!!

Char :)

I think one of the major problems, if not the major problem in this country is that we have all these old, rich liberals insisting the good ol' days were the 1960s -- and insist we have to go back to that golden era of their prime. That's classic grouchy old men and women who aren't going to let go of control until the day they die. They all want to be the Pope now -- with a lifetime job, preventing the next generation from taking over. Instead, they insist they're still in control (of all their faculties), and haven't lost a step so everybody better get behind and follow their lead with none of these young whippersnappers forgetting their place -- at the bottom of the pecking order.

But the next generation are starting to realize, they've got nothing going for them but their seniority -- and in many cases, senility. I don't think that should be demanding top billing and top dollar anymore. They need to learn how to age gracefully -- rather than roadkill proclaiming themselves to be spring chickens and still the sharpest knives in the drawer. People want to be nice -- but there's a limit to that tolerance that becomes abusive. Don't tip over your own apple carts! Be humble and appreciate what you have as the gifts of society -- rather than be resentful and bitter that they are not getting their due. Ingratitude is always this ugliness that overstays its welcome.
