Brother's death leaves Larry Little in shock

Dolphins legend Larry Little wanted to make sure to say one thing about younger brother David.

''I'm proud of the career he had,'' the NFL Hall of Famer said. ``A lot of times when you have an older brother who had a career like I had, people always would try to compare the younger to the older. He went on and did everything on his own. He had a great high school career, a great college career and a great NFL career.

``He didn't let that deter him. And, he had to live with it all his life.''

That life ended Thursday. David Little, a 46-year-old former NFL linebacker out of Miami Jackson High and the University of Florida, died while working out alone in his Miami home.

According to his older brother, the autopsy revealed David Little to be healthy. But a heart arrhythmia while lifting allowed a barbell to fall across his neck, suffocating him. David was found by the oldest of his three children, 17-year-old Killian High football player David Little Jr.

Saddened to hear it, but at least he didn't pass on the couch, with iced tea, pretzels, and cheese doodles covering a stained tshirt and pot belly.

That's MY plan.

Note to self (who has a history of occasional PVC's), use dumbells when working out...

If you are lifting on a bench with a barbell, don't use outside collars on the bar. I have been lifting for nearly forty years. I have dumped the weights, when I was unable to get a bench press up, simple by leaning the barbell one way or the other. The weights shrug off of one end and the other end takes care of itself.

Or use a power rack. They're not that expensive.

That happened to me, once. The weights slid off of one side just fine, then the imbalance causes the bar to literally jump up and flip off of my chest, it was kinda funny, although the gym guys were not too happy about it. Oh, and I have also used a power rack/cage. But sometimes, its just not available. Spotters are nice too, but again, sometimes I gotta go it alone.

Everything in moderation.

You'd think he could have afforded a power rack.

Notice how fast gravity effected the weighted end? Sure it's noisy and people give you strange looks but it is the safe way to go. It's better to say "excuse me" than for someone to say about you "he's dead".
Keep on lifting.

I took out a big portion of wall in the rec room doing just that a few weeks ago. I feel impelled to to warn others of my mistake. :)

What would have happened if the outside collars had been in place?
