If you are lifting on a bench with a barbell, don't use outside collars on the bar. I have been lifting for nearly forty years. I have dumped the weights, when I was unable to get a bench press up, simple by leaning the barbell one way or the other. The weights shrug off of one end and the other end takes care of itself.

The weights shrug off of one end and the other end takes care of itself. That happened to me, once. The weights slid off of one side just fine, then the imbalance causes the bar to literally jump up and flip off of my chest, it was kinda funny, although the gym guys were not too happy about it. Oh, and I have also used a power rack/cage. But sometimes, its just not available. Spotters are nice too, but again, sometimes I gotta go it alone.
Everything in moderation.

I took out a big portion of wall in the rec room doing just that a few weeks ago. I feel impelled to to warn others of my mistake. :)
