If you are lifting on a bench with a barbell, don't use outside collars on the bar. I have been lifting for nearly forty years. I have dumped the weights, when I was unable to get a bench press up, simple by leaning the barbell one way or the other. The weights shrug off of one end and the other end takes care of itself.

Or use a power rack. They're not that expensive.
