windows 98 tech help
March 20, 2005 | knarf

Posted on 03/20/2005 1:41:11 PM PST by knarf

My 9 yr old son, who thought he knew everything, plugged in a cd game that informed him he needed 256 color. He knew enough to right click on the desktop and that's where everything went wrong ...
I have for wallpaper the windows clouds .. they are now grey scale.
All of my desktop icons are very large and some are off the page. When I right click on my desktop, click prperties ... all of the active pages are so large, I can't move the page(s) to the point where I can 'apply' any remedy.
Any web sites, including FR, are all very large.

Reading FreeRepublic seven or eight lines at a time is too much.

How can I get my page properties back to normal?

Right click on your desktop, choose Properties, then Settings, and set your resolution back to 800x600 or 1024x800 or whatever you had it, and change the colors back to "High Color" or whatever the best you've got is.

have you tried "safe mode", then reset your display properties.

Go to properties, select appearance and select a default setting. Then you can find the settings you like.

Set it to at least 16-bit colors.

If you hit the TAB key it will cycle through the buttons and highlight or place sort of an outline around the active button or field. You should be able to see them highlighted as you keep hitting TAB.

Once it goes off the screen the OK button should be highlighted. Hit TAB again and it should highlight CANCEL and one more time it should highlight APPLY. Then hit ENTER and the new screen resolution should take effect.

Hit TAB until you can't see the field that is highlighted, hit TAB twice more and then hit ENTER

Try this one.

Click on Start>>Run then type in    scanreg /restore

This will bring up a list of registry backups with the word "started" next to them. Pick one that says started and has a date previous to the display cock-up. Let the PC restart and ...Whooppeeee! You should be back in business.

It's Bill Gates' fault.

Right click on an open area of your desktop, and click on settings, then click on the advanced tab, and on the pull down menu set your DPI setting to normal size (96 DPI), and then click on th Apply tab.

If the screen setting window goes off the screen so you cant move the window with the mouse, this is the way to move a window with the keyboard.

Press alt+space. Press the down arrow once. Press enter. Now you can move the window with the arrow keys, or you can move the window by moving the mouse. You should be able to reposition the window so you can access the proper buttons.

All of the 'apply' buttons are below the ability for me to drag up the page. If I drag the settings page all the way up, it is not far enough for me to even see the apply button.

As I type this reply, I have to use the horizontal scroll to preview what I've written ... that's how large all of this is.

Then maybe you need to set the resolution higher, that shrinks things.

If you re-start in "Safe mode" the vid. drivers, etc won't be called & pages should be of smaller size.
Re boot & hold down F8 key

Your son reset your desktop resolution and color settings.

Right-click the desktop, select Properties. Hit the Settings tab. There should be a little slider dial--use that to adjust your desktop resolution to what it was set to before. Most likely it was 1024x768.

After that, there should be a drop-down box to the right of that slider dial. Click it and select "Highest (32 bit)" if it's available, or "Medium (16 bit)" if not. Hit Apply and your settings will go back to normal.

If everything still looks too big, go back to the slider dial and adjust it to the right by one or two notches. If it looks too small, adjust it to the left by one notch.

The 'alt space down enter(ed)' window moves as an outline ... a ghost, so to speak ... nothing is defined, just a dotted box. Any attempt to get the repositioned 'window' to appear just brings me back to the original, oversize window.
