Detroit was such a beautiful city. It's location (halfway between Chicago and Toronto) should have made it a gem. What a waste.

The BS detector is off the scale!
"If it was a city of one million white people, of course you wouldn't have this urban decay, of course there would have been renewal, of course there would have been government intervention to bring in market forces that would benefit the city. But the story of Detroit is that it became a majority black city very quickly."

"Why are you building new structures, spending millions of dollars building new sports structures and entertainment centers, when you have the historic heritage of the city's right here abandoned across the street."
Why?
The reason is called LIBERALISM.
*chuckle*
Interesting though, they caught the current conditions of the historic buildings on tape.
Sounds fairly fascinating.

It's a shame, but that's the problem when a city relies on just one industry or one advantage. Cities are like your investment portfolio, you need to diversify your holdings. It might not give you 300% yearly returns, but it will save you from losing your shirt.

This implies that blacks are inept at running cities. Typical liberal racism.

At a bookstore recently I picked up and speed-read (didn't buy) parts of a book called "Collapse." It's by a California professor of geography describing the circumstances in which civilizations collapse. The last chapter is about what is happening to his own Los Angeles.

All cultures are NOT equal....and "self esteem" will NEVER come from a government welfare check or a phony government job.
The welfare program bastardization of the blacks in America was a big player in this disaster... What left wing Democrats didn't destroy -- the unions destroyed.
Liberals have once again produced devastating unintended consequences with their "well meaning" liberal bullsquat theology...
The DNC's attempt to secure the black plantation and the black vote -- has destroyed a large percentage of several generations of black families...

Greed. Corruption. Crime. Racism. Labor unions. White flight.
There are a lot of stories to tell about Detroit. Very few of them from the past 50 years are good.

Welcome to Detroit. Here is the Joe Lewis fist statue. Be prepared to see something like this coming straight at your face on the way into town, and another one smashing into the back of your head like a sucker punch on the way out of town.
Moral of this story: Never visit a town that uses a body part or human limb as a cultural icon.

The last time I was in Detroit my daughter and I looked at a three story mansion on the market for $650K (off Jefferson Ave). That house in my neighborhood would have been listed at $4 million plus. Detroit has some of the most awesome neighborhoods you'd ever hope to see. Unfortunately the risks involved in investing in the area are just too great for most of us.

"Why are you building new structures, spending millions of dollars building new sports structures and entertainment centers, when you have the historic heritage of the city's right here abandoned across the street. To a European it's totally incomprehensible. "
Well. . .there you have it. If the Eurowhiners are baffled then we must be wrong.
Rise = auto industry
Fall = thuggish unions.
End of movie.

In 1967, we had the bloodiest race riots in American history in Detroit. Something like 15% of the structures in the city were burnt.
The white flight after that was rapid and devastating. A city of nearly 2 million is now a city of 900,000.
The government that resulted, of the black racist Coleman Young, was as incompetent and corrupt as it was inflammatory.
And he held onto power for term after term after term, keeping racial hatred at a full boil, and making it impossible to do anything reasonable within the city limits.
The Detroit police were gutted, leaving the city America's murder capital for a decade.
Detroit is what happens when there is toxic racist politics, corruption, and violence is allowed to go unchecked.
Disaster and despair, with no hope of recovery until all three of those things changes. There is no real desire to change any of it. It all feeds on itself, like a dog returning to its vomit.

I lived in the Detroit metropolitan area for about ten years in the 80's and early 90's. Was always struck by the fact that there was as much money in the area as virtually anywhere in the country and what an absolute shame it was that the city hadn't developed in the way of Chicago, for example. Some of the greatest suburbs in the country can be found in the tri-county area but the city is an incredible mess.

Detroit (93.65% vote for Kerry and 5% for Bush) is the most democrat big city (over 100,000 people) in the entire country. That includes Berkeley, Oakland CA, San Francisco, Washington DC, Baltimore, Chicago, and any Borough of New York City. The mayor and city council members are uniformly democratic and their biographies are a roll-up of all the activist causes that have actually hurt big cities--labor rights, homeless advocacy, anti-police, etc.
Check this out from council woman Cockrel's bio:
Then in 1968, alarmed by an increase in cases of police brutality, she founded the Ad Hoc Action Group, a citywide organization that monitored the activities of the police department following the 1967 Rebellion.
That "1967 Rebellion" is otherwise known as the Detroit Riots.
