NEW YORK "The Family Circus" reached its 45th anniversary today. Or maybe it will reach its 45th anniversary tomorrow. That's because the comic panel started on a leap-year day -- Feb. 29, 1960.

Bil Keane created "The Family Circus," and now does it with his son, Jeff Keane, for more than 1,500 newspapers via King Features Syndicate.

I thought it was older than that.

Let me guess, in honor of this milestone they'll draw a cartoon of little Billy running around the house with a trail of dashes behind him?

And it's easily a finalist for "Lamest Cartoon to Run 45 Years."

...and in all those years it hasn't been funny once. Back in 1979, it approached humor in March, July and Sept, but then sank back into the same tired jokes.

Back when a comic strip didn't have to be crude or stupid to get laughs. Thank you, Mr. Keane.

I keep waiting for Ziggy to break into their home and kill them all. He'd scrawl "Death, death, death" on the walls in ink.

I'm sorry. I know that Family Circus is a much loved and wholesome cartoon. But I could never stand it. Contrived cuteness is nauseating.

In my mind, Far Side, Dilbert, Wizard of Id , and BC are the best cartoons.

I agree wholeheartedly! I'm 27 years old and began reading Family Circus when I was probably about 7 years old. It's never been my favorite comic, but it's always been a constantly good comic. There is something to be said about the steadiness and cleanliness of Family Circus. Thank you very much, Mr. Keane!

One morning I described my son's convoluted path from point A to point B to Cambridge liberal. You mean, he said, Family Circus is true? Yep, corny but true and sometimes even, funny. Thanks to the Keanes for 45 years of wtf :)

Ha ha! It'll be a tight race with the added competition of "Marmaduke" and "Ziggy" for the title!

And then Rex Morgan, MD will perform their autopsies, pouring himself into their case as a way to escape the pain of life. Pain that has been incessant since Mary Worth left him. But it's no use--he must withdraw into a fantasy world in which he is a great hero--known the dreamworld over as Prince Valiant.

Back in the 1960's I lived in Mendenhall, Pa., near Kennett Square. The local Keanes that I rode on the school bus with, swore that the Family Circle was drawn by their Uncle Keane. I've always wondered...
