Two Die In Passaic County Plane Accident

Tragedy in Passaic County.

A small plane carrying two people crashed in West Milford yesterday, killing both passengers.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna 182 was attempting to take off from Greenwood Lake Airport when it crashed at the end of the runway. The four-seat, single-engine plane was quickly engulfed by flames and was destroyed.

Authorities say the victims were 79-year-old Harold Botsford Junior, a flight instructor from Ringwood, and Ted Fletcher, a pilot from Franklin Lakes who was trying to refresh his license.

A tragedy. I hope he didn't hit any of the black bears that are prevalent in the area. PETA would be quite upset.

79 seems old to me for a flight instructor. At some point the trade-off between experience and failing faculties begins to look like a losing proposition.

Would be interesting to know what contributed to a crash on take-off.

That's why I never wanted to be a CFI. Too many students are trying to kill you.

I'll check with my contacts with the FAA and try to get a Cause as soon as possible.

My take on it is that I managed to survive flight instructing.

I thought the same thing. I mean no disrespect to the deceased, but at some point, I would question whether or not it's wise for someone to continue to function as a flight instructor (or pilot).

Loss of airspeed - sure ... caused by...
1. icing?
2. bad fuel? no fuel?
3. loss of power due to engine problem?
4. throttle not being fully engaged?
5. etc. etc. etc.

Just some ideas... anxious to know cause...

Could have been a case of loosing rpm's on touch and go's. I have been in that situation and it's no fun at all. Had to think fast and switch mags which cleared it up. If not for that I probably would have bought the farm.
