Japan’s population set to fall from next year
Financial Times ^ | February 22 2005 | David Pilling

The number of men in Japan has begun to shrink for the first time since records began, heralding a fall in the overall population from next year.

The decline in the number of men signals a historic shift in Japan's population, the ageing of which is likely to have a profound influence on the country's pension system, labour market and tax base.

Japanese men are on an anti-marriage and anti-cohabitation strike due to feminism and its usual push for a rising divorce/cohabitation rate. ...much more of a factor than fewer men in the population.

It looks to me like the peak perhaps has already occurred. (The first digits in the left column are the year in the emperor system.)

Bad omen for the West.

Japan's population is about to go into a free fall - just as China is kicking up a lot of dirt in that part of the world.

The Liberals may finally get their way - extermination of Western society.

I heard many times that the Japanese have a two child policy. More psychological than brutal like the Chinese, abortion takes its toll once again.

Women who had abortions, many of them married with a third pregnancy, say a prayer for their aborted children and ancestors at the many streetside shrines.

It takes awhile, but abortion is starting to really mess up whole economies.

No, that's not correct. In fact, it is government policy to encourage more children in Japan due to concern about a falling population.

Here's a pretty good (not great) article comparing the U.S., Japan, and some other countries.

And here is the child policy statement from Prime Minister's Koizumi New Year's address:

In order to change the trend in decreasing birthrate, the government will continue promoting the Zero Waiting for Day Care Program based on the newly compiled "Child and Child Rearing Support Plan." Our goal is to spread the use of the child-care leave system from the current 60 percent to a 100 percent in five years. We will develop an environment in which parents can have children without worry and experience the joy of child rearing. The government will provide assistance so that women can exert their talents and take on challenges in various areas, including business or regional vitalization.

And here is a comprehensive study on children in Japan from the Japanese government.

And the major reason it has been falling is because of the government's prior pro abortion policy. I'm glad to hear that's changed - although the obvious implication is that the former policy worked too well. Poor little babies. And the mothers who wanted to keep them, if not for policy.

In the USA, just wait until the general public gets a clue about abortion vs future taxpayers paying into Social Security. That'll be a real eye opener for them!

Here are two web pages about Japan and government abortion policy:

This one includes the legal background and the legal changes from the post-war period until now.

This one is based on a speech back in 1997.

"Japanese men are on an anti-marriage and anti-cohabitation strike due to feminism..."

I don't think so. The phenomenon is young Japanese women living with parents, rent free, with good jobs and lots of money to spend on luxury goods.

They see traditional marriage as a trap, where the wife is expected to stay home, take care of the kids, waiting for hubby to return from a night of drinking with fellow office workers.

The husband returns, to issue one word orders to his subservient wife - meshi (food), furo (bath), neru (sleep).

Until Japanese men adopt a more Western attitude toward sharing the family chores, Japan will suffer.
