The mere mention of the Libertarian Party was apparently enough to kill a proposed smoking ban ordinance in LaPorte, Ind., earlier this month, continuing the Indiana LP's dedication to standing up for the rights of business owners to set their own policies.
The mayor of LaPorte had proposed forming a "study committee" to target small business owners -- such as restaurants and bars -- by banning smoking in such businesses. And it looked like a done deal, says Indiana Libertarian Party chairman Mark Rutherford, noting that 11 of the 14 city council members were expected to approve the formation of the committee.
However, two small business owners spoke against the creation of such a committee -- and the smoking ban that would almost certainly have been proposed by it. This prompted "one councilor to suggest that a member of the Libertarian Party be added to the committee," Rutherford said.
And at that, the proposal was defeated, at least for now.
"The Libertarian Party of Indiana, through its efforts against smoking bans in LaPorte, Indianapolis and Bloomington, is proving to small business owners that the Libertarian Party is the only political party that serves their interests," Rutherford said. "The LaPorte County LP is to be commended in its efforts in this regard as well."
Members of the LaPorte County LP promised they will remain vigilant for more attempts to impose a smoking ban against the citizens of LaPorte.
Few organizations are willing to publicly oppose smoking bans, but the Libertarian Party is proud to be organizing resistance to such initiatives, said Indiana LP Executive Director Brad Klopfenstein.
"We want people to know that when municipalities try to trample the rights of citizens and business owners, the Libertarian Party will be there to fight for them," Klopfenstein said.
He has been contacting restaurant and bar owners in an effort to build a coalition to fight the ordinances -- with a goal of having "an army of small business people ready and organized to fight city hall," according to the state LP's Web site, www.lpin.org.
"I want every elected official in Indiana to know going in that when they try to impose restrictions on private businesses, the Libertarian Party will be there to hold them accountable," Klopfenstein said. "It's one thing for municipalities to set smoking restrictions on public-owned property. It's something completely different for them to dictate how a private business sets smoking policies on private property."

Stop making fun of me! :)

Good Luck Indiana........you'll need it. This crap always starts in NY(my own people republic) and CA and winds up eventually making its way to the rest of the country.....
if you don't already have seat belt, helmet, and Cell Phone driving laws, LOOK OUT.....
Oh we got seat belt laws and they are about to be expanded by the republicans and the "conservatives" are all for it and if youoppose expanding the seat belt laws then you are a sniveling communist according to some on this thread Senate panel backs extending seat-belt requirements (more RINOs coming out of the woodwork)
Here in NH we don't have seat belt helmet or cell phone laws. and we went down with the blue states. :{
But i'll keep my eyes peeled.
rights
I'm here in Upstate NY right now, but I'm trying to make my way to NH as soon as possible.
Things I promise not to bring with me are seat belt laws, smoking bans, cell phone laws, motorcycle helmet laws, gun control, etc.
What I WILL bring is the desire to fight that stuff and expand personal and economic freedoms in NH!
Where do I sign up? The LP is looking mighty good.
Thats right. The LP is the only party in America today that recognizes all your individual rights, to include the right to secede. We recognize the rights of not only states, but all individual people to join together in groups, or as lone individuals, and secede from any government. No other party is working for your absolute rights as an individual as the LP does.
Much as the evangelicals in the GOP love to demonize the libertarians for our stance regarding the failed and destructive War on (some) Drugs, we're still their best allies against the statist, totalitarian Left.
ROFL!
I think too many Americans are waking up to the tyranny of the Democrat-Republican big government machine to be duped by that smear much longer.
Looking forward to a Libertarian in the White House in 2008!
I admire your optimism but think it will be 2012 at the earliest before we have a shot at getting a libertarian president in the white house or congress
sorry I couldnt help myself you know how us hedonistic Libertarians are we totally lack any self control so i pretty much had to :-D
