New resistant strain of HIV diagnosed in New Yorker (full blown AIDS in 3 months)

A new, highly resistant strain of HIV that appears to develop rapidly into AIDS has been diagnosed in a New Yorker who had not previously undergone antiviral drug treatment, says the city health department, which is holding a press conference today.

While drug resistance is increasingly common in people who have been treated for the human immunodeficiency virus, city officials called the case “extremely rare.” The patient, who now has AIDS, is a male in his mid-40s who reported multiple male sex partners and unprotected anal intercourse, often while using crystal methamphetamine. The patient appears to have developed AIDS within two to three months of HIV infection, and at the most 20 months. People who contract AIDS usually get it more than 10 years after initial infection with HIV.

Allowing gays to marry will solve the whole problem.

Yes folks that is sarcasm.

...are there any projections on when the thing might become an airborne-communicable variant?

exposure to oxygen kills it.

Maybe when you develop full blown AIDS in 3 hours they will get the message.

The HIV virus is enveloped which means that when it buds from your cells after replication, it takes with it some of your cell membrane (lipids, proteins). Therefore, transmission has to be through fluids because the envelope must be wet. Detergents, which disrupt lipids are sufficient to render the virus inactive.

However, the HIV DNA is replicated with an enzyme called reverse transcriptase (hence, RT inhibitors as drug treatments). The enzyme has no "spell checking" function like that which replicates our DNA so copying virus DNA is more error prone and therefore leads to frequent mutations. This is the reason that it is so drug resistant since DNA mutations will render it so.

It is possible that mutations could make it more efficient since all it would take would be a few mutations in the right genes.

This is a first documentation of such but I am not surprised that it has happened since it is theoretically possible.

Science has never cured a virus. We can only suppress the symptoms. In the end the virus always finds a way to survive.

Er, polio??

You guys continue year after year to fall this homo scam. HIV DOES NOT CAUSE AIDS, and AIDS IS NOT A SEXUALLY TRANSMITTABLE DISEASE. Antiviral resistance,...please. Why do I even bother! Go ahead! Live in false fear! Me, I'm fine. Never spend a moment thinking about an ACQUIRED "syndrome" caused by illegal drug use.

Let's see, homos can't reproduce, AIDS is "supposedly killing them off like flies, they use the AIDS "issue" to insinuate themselves into grammar schools, junior highs, and high schools, they suck up our tax dollars doing it, and to survive they have "recruit" new "members". Yeah, I think that about says it all!

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

The radical homo activists will say this is not exclusively a homosexual disease because the virus doesn't discriminate. However they'll deny the fact that the virus is not completely independent of "risky behavior" and homosexuals are more prone due to their behavior to get the virus and pass it along.

If you want on/off the ping list see my profile page.

It's been said a thousand times, but I'll say it again: Abstinence is the best AIDS prevention program!

No, no, no, no, no! What we need is more safe sex and safe crystal methamphetamine education in our schools.

Amen sister! I told my husband the day we got married, sweetie just remember how much you love me today and that if you ever think about cheating please tell me. I can get over you thinking about another woman and we can work to fix it, but I will never ever ever forgive you if you bring me home Aids, herpes, syphllis, gonorrhea, et al.

To this day he loves me and is faithful to me, our vows and our children. There are good people in this world and all these sick perverts are missing out on a wonderful God given gift of love.

I don't feel the need to agree or disagree with their lifestyle. Any I have ever spoke with knew everything and always had someone to blame for their problems. They are big boys, let them figure it out. I do think they should change the name to RDP. Radical Democratic Plague.

The meth is getting more toxic as they find faster ways to make it.(basically cutting more corners off the process) Here in Vegas it is causing very nasty sores (much worse then usual). They are being caused because the body cannot assimilate or process the stuff and it is leaching out through the skin. Many users have some horrible sores and they wont quit snorting, smoking, and shooting the poisen.

"The patient, who now has AIDS, is a male in his mid-40s who reported multiple male sex partners and unprotected anal intercourse, often while using crystal methamphetamine."

Strangely enough, I do feel compassion for this person. It's to bad he had to die before he turned himself around. That's assuming he would have. Actions have consequences as I have found out myself many times.

This strain kills too fast. It probably won't go very far, unless this guy passed it on already. It just kills too fast!

You're talking about a sub-culture where it's not unusual to screw several strangers per week. If the probability of infecting somebody per screw is over 5%, it will spread exponentially thru the gay population.
