Bill Would Require Restaurants to Post Calorie Counts

Earlier this year the Food and Drug Administration's Obesity Working Group issued its "Calories Count" report urging the FDA to work with restaurants to disclose the number of calories in the products they sell," according to an editorial in today's Wall Street Journal. "But that's not good enough for some grinches in Congress. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin (D) and Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D) plan to re-introduce bills requiring chain restaurants with more than 20 outlets to list calorie counts either on menu boards or printed menus."

In "Government Gets Fat Fighting Obesity," Cato policy analyst Radley Balko writes: "The war against obesity is the logical conclusion of our wars against certain drugs and, later, tobacco. The most personal of daily decisions -- what we put into our bodies -- is now a matter of 'public health.'

"... [W]e need to return personal responsibility to the policy-making process. What each individual American puts into his or her body ought to be the sole concern and responsibility of each individual American -- not nutrition activists, not state or federal agencies."

Calorie counts should be available, but not necessarily printed on a menu. No, big meals aren't good for you, but would you ever guess that a bloomin' onion is 2,800 calories?

Calorie or special diet information should be available on request.

BUT...

When I go out to eat; it's special and I do not want warning labels, calorie counts or any other pc stuff on my menu.

I can read "light" or "fish" or "chicken" for myself and that is just fine.

Why don't they just go ahead and put the labels on the food itself and get it over with.......

Ruby Tuesday tried printing the nutrition information on their menu for a short time. Believe it or not, but the steamed vegetable platter was higher in calories than the sirlion steak (400 vs. 300). In fact steak was by far the lightest fare, lower in calories than all the sides, salads etc. No wonder Atkins dieters lose weight.

** LIBERAL CRAP ALERT **
Yes the government will think for you now, you do not have to worry -- we will tell you what to eat, when to eat it, and make sure you have no responsibility for getting fat -- that is the fault of the restaurant if you eat too much, and get fat!!!!!

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

As if printing the calories of every item, on the menu, will change the eating habits of the average American, and eliminate obesity.

IMHO, this is a big waste of money and time.

First, IIRC, everything has calories. If it doesn't, it ain't food. Fat versus protein would be a more helpful measurement.
Calories are not the monster that makes people overweight.

(Oh, look, the enviro-burger has only 500 calories. Give me five of em!, and a gallon of Coke)

It is not what we eat, it is how much, how often, and the amount (or lack) of excercise afterwards.

As a matter of sound business policy restaurants should have calorie counts available for the health food nuts that come into the restaurants. But it should be voluntary which ever restaurants don't have them available Will stop being patronized by the customers that are looking to start eating healthier and they will lose money and business until they comply with the wishes of their customers just like the free market always does things. But no way in hell should it be a federal law that every restaurant have them available or risk being should down by the FBI or whatever Gestapo agency gets assigned to police burger joints. This is still(barely)America after all

Get a grip. A "bloomin' onion" is NOT meant to be eaten by ONE person. More like 4-6 people.

The same onion, uncooked, would be 40 calories.

In the early 90's, Governor Florio of NJ proposed outlawing the consumption of improperly cooked eggs making eating a three minute egg a crime.<p.It lost him re-election.

Sounds good to me. I try to patronize only restaurants that publicize calorie counts. I research the menus on the Web before eating. It's funny. A wallop of whipped cream is 24 calories at Denny's, but at Starbuck's it's like 250.

I'm starting to become like a freak like you! I havebeen cookin stuff at home lately and i think it tastes better than the stuff at the restaurant! !
Also there is no one to blame but themselves for getting fat. I don't care how these libs put it, but i balance what i eat because i know the consequence. It's not societies fault people shove food in their mouths, don't exercsise and sit around, get lazy and grow, and it's not us and restaurants whome should put labels on the food, even if you put how many pounds a spoon of something will add to you, people will still eat that shit because thats what they want to eat.

I agree about the exercise and watching what you eat but some things that I think are ok are really very high in calories because of how they are prepared. Butter in vegs, added sugar etc. I don't think it should be mandatory but I go to restaurants that will provide the info for me if I ask. I would prefer to see it on the menu but I can understand why some would not. I went to a chain awhile back and asked how many calories. The waitress didn't know so she went and asked the cook. He sent me back the message that if I had to ask I couldn't afford it! I laughed.

maybe all restaurants should have you sign a waiver declaring they are not responsible for your stupidity and lousy upbringing if you cant figure out eating 3000 calories a day and sitting typing on FR all day won't make you a fat ass
