In the past our politicians offered us dreams of a better world. Now they promise to protect us from nightmares.
The most frightening of these is the threat of an international terror network. But just as the dreams were not true, neither are these nightmares.
In a new series, the Power of Nightmares explores how the idea that we are threatened by a hidden and organised terrorist network is an illusion.
It is a myth that has spread unquestioned through politics, the security services and the international media.
THE POWER OF NIGHTMARES
Three part series
Wednesdays from 20 October
2100 BST on BBC Two

Both were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world.
These two groups have changed the world but not in the way either intended.
Those with the darkest fears became the most powerful

A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. Those with the darkest fears became the most powerful.
The rise of the politics of fear begins in 1949 with two men whose radical ideas would inspire the attack of 9/11 and influence the neo-conservative movement that dominates Washington.
Both these men believed that modern liberal freedoms were eroding the bonds that held society together.
The two movements they inspired set out, in their different ways, to rescue their societies from this decay. But in an age of growing disillusion with politics, the neo-conservatives turned to fear in order to pursue their vision.
They would create a hidden network of evil run by the Soviet Union that only they could see.
The Islamists were faced by the refusal of the masses to follow their dream and began to turn to terror to force the people to "see the truth"'.
The Power of Nightmares, a three part series begins on Wednesday, 20 October 2004 at 2100 BST on BBC Two with Baby It's Cold Outside.
This is a little dated, but I just couldn't believe it when I read this article.
See? You were dreaming all this. Now say thank you to the nice BBC person.
That darn President Bush.
They are on some serious stuff - illusions and delusions are common for these folks
please. I remember reading about a huge rally in London where the Muslims were openly calling for the UK to become an Islamic state... does the BBC think thats gonna happen peacefully?
The BBC is drinking some serious Berry Tropical Kool-Aid
That's right, BBCrap, ignore those radical Islamic clerics in your own country, eh, what?
One day these jackals will try to teach our kids that the cold war was imagined.
Too bad for the Poles, Czechs, Afghanis, Hungarians, etc. that it isn't true.
Dear Oschisms:
That smell of burning flesh you were angry about?
It was just an illusion.
Best,
BBC
Wonder what the dead Liberals of 9/11 would have to say to these idiots?
That's right, BBC. There is no terrorist threat. The WTC just vanished by magic one day and no one knows why. Maybe space aliens took it when no one was watching? Those jets that appeared to crash into buildings was a mind control experiment by the Jews, er, Zionis..., er, Israelies. That's it! Israelies and space aliens! And Britain is under no threat by militant Muslims who have been imported in droves and who advocate violence. No, the only threat Britain faces is those evil fox hunters and those nasty shotgun-weilding farmers. Better eliminate those people.
Truly frightening that people with functioning brains write and produce crap like this.
What century are these morons living in, anyway?
This IS the liberal view of terror. JFK had this view all year.
Clinton had this view, a few bombs dropped in an empty camp, and our response to a terror attack was over.
Key point is what we always heard was true:
Liberals are soft on defense, soft on crime. They fail at the key elemental point of government-protection of the people.
liberals find it far more important to create gov't welfare programs to make voters dependant on liberals, than to fund defense.
Liberals could never fight the cold war because they ARE the communists!
never, ever trust a liberal in power, or with things like defense.
The BBC's creation of a story like this, out of thin air should not be shocking. If the kerry campaign has taught us nothing, liberals and their media will lie/say anything, no mater how outrageous/ to achieve their goals.
The basic premise of this story could never exist without the blood and sweat of the FBI,CIA, and every local police dept. Those brave men have protected us from that "Phantom Network," preventing any repeat attack. Sadly, people will believe the propaganda ministers of the BBC rather than the good men who stand in the breach.
"modern liberal freedoms" ~ talk about a phrase that dredges up illusions. Isn't this where we got the AIDS epidemic?
Unbelivable. Not until downton London goes up in smoke I guess.
