THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | 11-11-04 | Marguerite Higgins

The low-carb craze has passed its prime, as companies report a pickup in the sales of starch-heavy food. General Mills Inc., which makes cereals such as Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Wheaties and Trix, said sales climbed almost 3 percent in the third quarter, to $2.58 billion from $2.51 billion a year ago.

I'm hoping the lowcarb industry strengthens if you ask me. I'm hypoglycemic, so I need to eat high-protein, low carb foods. I'm starting to see more and more products as of late, which is great.

L knew ya'll couldn't hold out forever!

That's why I held on to my Krispy Kreme stock. Mmmmm ...doughnuts! Sweet, sugary, high carb goodness.

Actually, if they are only reporting a rise in boxed cereals (as opposed to across the board breads and grains) then it's more an indicator of an economy on the rise.

Every mom knows - when the money slows, the box cereal GOES. It's way too expensive to pay four dollars for a small box of cereal, when you can pay two dollars for a big bag...

I disagree. I find this diet fad to be annoying; therefore, I advocate the elimination of all low-carb products.

The article is part fact, part wishful thinking.

I lost 30 pounds from a low-carb diet and my health has improved. I used the weight drop to help me get back in to more physical fitness, brought my carbs up some and I will never go back to my previous lifestyle. If you do go on a low carb diet, just don't be too foolish when it comes to fat and egg consumption, which I have seen some people do.

That's the truth. Those big bags help out our budget :) We are a single income family (I homeschool and have parental caregiver responsibilities) and luckily there is really no difference in taste to my five year old and hubby:D

Yeah, I have noticed that my shirts that my wife irons for me have been a little stiffer. Musta been the extra starch!

A serving of Cheerios really isn't that many calories.

Often I wonder if low-carbers miss the point. It's not carbs that are evil, it's calories! ...And I say that from experience. :-)

This mom never bought cereal, regardless of the economy. My kids were much happier with oatmeal, scrambled eggs wrapped in a flour tortilla, leftover pizza.

I love low-carb, especially The Low Carb Bartender. Lose weight with a drink in your hand and a smile on your face.

My kinda diet!

I don't think the low carb thing is going to go away soon. Whatever you think of it for weight loss, it is undeniably the fastest, easiest way to improve your blood lipid levels and to stabilize blood sugar problems, at least for a lot of people.

With all the Type II diabetics around I'll bet it just goes from fad to lifestyle.

I'm inclined to be hyper-fat-emic, left to my own devices; so low-carb continues to be a "must" for me.

I stayed at a Hampton Inns last night for the first time in about four months... When I went to get my complimentary Continental Breakfast... no whole milk.. 2% and skim only.. no doughnuts or sweets.. bagels (Yuk).. non-sugared cereals.. WTF?? So, I asked. "That's the new menu" the sweet lady replied. Where's the Krispy Kreme, I thought... Why do they think their role is to be the evil mother? I'm almost 50 and not overweight by any stretch. I want my whole milk and doughnuts.

I'm still waiting for the consumer fraud folks to come down on the food makers who list ingredients like "dehydrated cane juice" to avoid saying "sugar."
