(CNN) -- An anti-abortion group Thursday accused President Bush of ignoring his anti-abortion principles in nominating White House counsel Alberto Gonzales for the post of attorney general.
"As a Texas Supreme Court justice, Gonzales' rulings implied he does not view abortion as a heinous crime," said Judie Brown, president of the American Life League, in a written statement.
Bush announced Wednesday that he had chosen his long-time friend to replace Attorney General John Ashcroft, who is stepping down. (Bush picks Gonzales to head Justice Department)
Gonzales has worked with Bush since he was the governor of Texas -- serving as Bush's general counsel, then as Texas Secretary of State before Bush appointed him to the state's highest court. (Gonzales political fortunes tied to Bush's)

Really. Collin Powell is also a liberal at heart.
At least he's not in a position that allows him access to the legal team working for the USofA though like Gonzales will be.
The Attorney General's job is to enforce the law, as he understands it, even if he doesn't agree with it.
What he believes about abortion will not really affect what he does as AG.
I suspect you are right in that we shall see. President Bush has made the choice and my guess is it will be approved in the Senate and thus we will have an AG Gonzales... Hopefully it won't be one that is vastly wrong or in error.
Enjoyed the back and forth and you have a nice day...
Judges without agendas.. That sounds almost like it should be the name of a political action committee.
I can't beat that summation, LOL!
It's not like he is putting him in for being a judge. I would assume Bush can trust him. However, people that are disturbed about him choosing Gonzales for AG; need to remember that as pro-life and conservative as RReagan was, he did nominate Sandra D. O'Connor. And she wasn't pro-life at all; and was not the purist of conservatives either!
I would assume Bush can trust him.
I know, it made me a little uneasy too. I had hoped for a more conservative person in there too. However, I don't know if pro-life issues are for conservatives alone! I have heard of pro-life liberals, and otherwise pro-abortion conservatives. It depends upon what a person is conservative or liberal about! I like some of what I see in Mr. Gonzales.
From what I understand, even though he tends to be pro-choice in regards to abortion, (maybe other things also); he is known to be good in interpreting the law according to the way it is written.(Texas case)And that is what GWB wanted in judges. But, he isn't up for a judgeship anywhere, so maybe he'll be ok.
It's exactly as I have been freeping about, Bush is veering to the left more, and more, by the end of his second term we are all going to think that the liberal Kerry won the election, I have looked upon Bush as not the ideal candidate to us Conservatives. Think about it, Amnesty, and drivers licenses for illegals, civil unions for the radical gays, saying "God should have mercy on Arafat's soul", picking Gonzalez for AG,or do you think I am just over reacting? I can only call it the way I see it.
I believe Bush appointed Gonzalez knowing full well what he was doing, and yes, Bush is a social liberal and we it will become more prevalent as we get deeper in his second term.
What makes you think Bush won't nominate him for the Supreme Court? Certainly being AG isn't a disqualifier.
A lot of Freepers can and do.
PS, I forgot to mention supporting the most liberal "Republican Senator Arlen Sphincter, and getting a knife in the back for it.
Yes they do, I can see that some freepers are sheeple. I for one will not support every move that Bush makes, Churchill buff hah? I'm kind of partial to the iron lady, Margaret Thatcher. Both were great leaders of the British people.
Yes he does...
A judge who recognizes his duty to apply the law, not to make it. How refreshing! We could use a few like him on the Supreme Court.
Amen! We need an AG who will respect existing laws. If we don't like the laws then we work to change them.
