(CNN) -- An anti-abortion group Thursday accused President Bush of ignoring his anti-abortion principles in nominating White House counsel Alberto Gonzales for the post of attorney general.

"As a Texas Supreme Court justice, Gonzales' rulings implied he does not view abortion as a heinous crime," said Judie Brown, president of the American Life League, in a written statement.

Bush announced Wednesday that he had chosen his long-time friend to replace Attorney General John Ashcroft, who is stepping down. (Bush picks Gonzales to head Justice Department)

Gonzales has worked with Bush since he was the governor of Texas -- serving as Bush's general counsel, then as Texas Secretary of State before Bush appointed him to the state's highest court. (Gonzales political fortunes tied to Bush's)

Will Gonzalez try to enforce law already on the books?

Isnt that what the AG does?

Gonzalez interpreted the law as it was written. As a result, the Texas law was re-written and clarified.

CNN playing the divide and conquer game.

Well, he shouldn't have! Currently, abortion is LEGAL. A judges first job is to ENFORCE the laws no matter what his personal feelings are.

I am heartened by that. It shows that if a case is brought before him, he will review it properly. When cases againts abortion arise, he'll look at those appropriately as well.

The anti-abortion crowd are going to be dissapointed if they expect ideological purity from Bush.

Abortion should be and will be reigned in, but it will not be eliminated.

Judges without agendas.. That sounds almost like it should be the name of a political action committee.

If he is pro-abort, then better as AG than on the Supreme Court.

Well it certainly cannot be riened in from the AG's office. More of the same nonsense from the MSM. They cannot learn a thing. It will take another major blowout like this year in 08 to get to them. It is going to be a long 4 years.

It won't be reined in but some guidelines will be introduced... As limits on third trimester abortions...

Which would be absolutely in line with the original R v. W decision...

If I was Bush I would find as many conservative Latinos and Latinas as I could and pack the government and the courts with them.

Latinos are the largest and fastest growing minority group and NOW is the time bring them into the tent.

We can have them with us for several generations if we work it right.

"Currently, abortion is LEGAL."

Yes, currently. I would like to see Roe v Wade overturned. Not sure it will ever happen, but hey, gotta give it a shot.

I'm wondering, with Bush appointing Gonzalez to AG, doesn't this put alot more pressure on the Senate Reps to keep Specter from becoming SJC chair?

I have to say too, I was extremely worried that Gonzalez might be a Bush Supreme Court pick. I'd much rather have him as AG, where as long as he simply ebforces the law, he should be ok.

frankly ALL and Judie Brown are extremists and should not be representatives of the pro-life cause. In the late 90's, Judie and ALL attacked National Right to Life for not being pro-life enough, which was utterly ridiculous. Ever since then, I just can't take ALL and Judie seriously.

Which was an abomination of judicial activism.

Oh I know, murderers loved it, but then, they love murder so all other opinions are irrelevant.

Why is the ALL so upset? The key point is that Gonzales will be AG and will therefore NOT be on the SCOTUS.

This is great news!!!

A Gonzales quote from the article:

While the ramifications of such a law may be personally troubling to me as a parent, it is my obligation as a judge to impartially apply the laws of this state without imposing my moral view on the decisions of the legislature.

A judge who recognizes his duty to apply the law, not to make it. How refreshing! We could use a few like him on the Supreme Court.
