Amir Taheri: A Rude Awakening
New York Post ^ | November 4, 2004 | Amir Taheri

Posted on 11/04/2004 5:59:17 AM PST by OESY

...The European elites had spent much of Tuesday evening dreaming about how a President Kerry would ratify the Kyoto accords, sign on to the International Criminal Court, cut and run in Iraq, send flowers to Yasser Arafat and, perhaps, open a dialogue with Osama bin Laden. When it became clear that the American voters wanted none of that, the chattering classes in Europe were left speechless....

With Dubya's victory, it will no longer be possible for the Hate-America international to pose as merely anti-Bush. Their claim that Bush and his gang of Likudniks had somehow hijacked the United States has been swept away by American voters....

Schroeder has been trying hard to compensate for the crass opportunism he showed in 2003 over the liberation of Iraq. He has sent more troops to Afghanistan to help relieve American forces there, and has assumed a major role in training Iraq's new security forces with help from other NATO allies.

The new Spanish government, too, has tried to modify its initial anti-American posture by sending troops to a number of places, including Haiti, to relieve the Americans. Within the European Union only France, Belgium and Greece had been active on the anti-American front....

All three governments had made a strategic choice of systematically opposing Bush policies in the hope that a Kerry administration would adopt substantial parts of their foreign policies. Yesterday, however, all three were making noises about working with the new Bush administration....

Moderate and democratic forces — from Indonesia through Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq to Morocco — will be encouraged by the prospect of four more years the first U.S. administration to threaten a status quo dominated by despotic regimes. Bush's victory, however, is bad news for reactionary despotic regimes, pan-Arabists and Islamo-fascists who had prayed for a Kerry victory....

This just goes to show you how the left seriously undermines the War on Terror for America...

All the Bush bashing and the "President Selected" rhetoric has the European Allies thinking Pres. Bush was not to be taken seriously because most Americans were not behind him...Wednesday night was the sweetest thing for us as Americans...all Americans!

I have come to the conclusion that the Europeans are far more ignorant of us than we are of them. Bush won fair and square in 2000 but they didn't understand.

Bush will hopefully lead Europe too and allow those who hate socialism and love freedom to feel they can express themselves openly.

France is the enemy of the US in my opinion, the rest of Europe that follows France are just tag alongs and could be shaped according to public opinion. If France was ever in trouble I would be willing to impeach a President who would send our boys to protect them.

Taheri makes an interesting comment and it has historical precedent. He calls Bush the first American president to directly challeng the existence of despotism in the world.I think a true statement. Ronald Reagan was the first American President to actually challenge in policy the existence of Communism. Earlier Presidents recognized the threat of Communism and rose to meet it, but Reagan alone among them saw it possible to actually defeat it and remove it as a threat to humanity. Taheri is saying that President Bush sees the same possiblities in removing despots from their positions as oppressors of their own people and threats to the civilized world. I think he is not wrong in his appraisal of President Bush's goals.

The Leftist American elites fawn on the European elites and the EU elites view the nation through the prisms of their contafcts with our leftist elites and their media. I imagine that there was actually some genuine shock in the EU over this election. Many Euros that I know - at least those that have spent no time in America - expected Kerry to win in a Landslide. I have found them to be quite irrational about this.

Maybe after we bring freedom and democracy to the Middle East, we can do the same for Old Europe.

Last time I looked at the Constitution, it said that the US Senate, not the President, ratifies treaties. The Senate rejected Kyoto 99-0.

The second Bush administration should give them a chance to prove that they have changed course.

Wrong. Let Olde Europe, like the UN, prove to everyone that they are still relevent. These people sold Iraq and Iran much of weaponry we are having so much trouble gathering up over there. They are largely responsible for 1100 American lives.

Being "elites" is totaly a fidgement of their imagination... they are already dhimmies in their own countries, and this status is far from elitarian, isn't it?
