California Flyer #3 WITHOUT Bible Verses - PLEASE CRITICIZE
Me ^ | 10-31-2004 | Me

Thank you for your criticisms past. Please criticize me one more time before I go out guns blazing.

TOPICS: Culture/Society; Politics/Elections; US: California; Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: abortion; flyer
Here are the changes I have made:

1) Separated the flyers into a) stem-cells b) abortion

2) left science out of the stem-cells flyer

3) Further simplified the stem-cell argument according to a Freeper's advice (thank you!).

Flyer 3 PDF stem-cells

Flyer 4 PDF abortion

A comprehensive plan to execute the 1st Century Christian faith needs to be worked out and executed, but not at the last minute before election day.

Agggh! You put too much faith in our amateur expertise my friend ;) I'm just an English major. LOL. I feel like a nit-picky hen-wife, but... if you've got the extra space, use it to your advantage by spacing out your msh in easily read phrases. Use larger font for eye-catchers (I've used bold instead). Example:

Prop 71 will

steal taxpayer dollars

for what amounts to

coprorate welfare

for Bitotech companies

at a time when California

can't pay its bills

Vote NO on Prop 71

I have no problem with the flyer referring to stem cell research.

However, I have several thoughts on the abortion flyer, namely:
- With respect to the argument that the outlawing of abortion will result in a larger population, which will result in more "friends" for people- I am not so sure that this is a good argument for a topic that is so far reaching and deep.
- With respect to the argument that the outlawing of abortion will result in a larger population, which will result in a larger tax base, and more people to spread the burden out over- I am sure that this is a poor argument. First, this is a poor reason to oppose abortion; even if your audience does not respond to traditional arguments. Second, as far as I know, a significantly disproportionate amount of abortions are had by people in society who fall on the lower end of the economic scale. It is very likely that these children would grow up and not even pay taxes, making the burden heavier instead of lighter (the lower 50% of wage earners pay about 4% of the taxes, and most pay nothing). Strictly speaking, this argument does not logically flow to a sound end.

I am vehemently pro-life, but it is my opinion that the abortion flyer is very poor. I assume that you are using these arguments to get the attention of people who do not respond to traditional arguments: essentially to be different. If this is so, I am not sure you should water down an argument simply to reach others. We can argue these points on a moral, scientific, Christian, philosophical, etc. level, but we need to stay consistent in the foundation of our argument: we should not allow abortion because it is a child that is murdered.

Your attitude and heart are right on in wanting to get this message out there, but make sure you use the proper tools to achieve your objective. It is my hope that you get this message to whomever will listen. But I also hope that you choose to do it in another manner.

Here's some advice.

Cruise over to www.istockphoto.com and pick yourself out some nice cheap ($1) stock photography (of cute babies) to give your flyer some visual appeal.

(And I agree that the "less abortions lowers your taxes" argument is sort of weak.)

An interesting approach to the Abortion issue. Will it turn off the Zero Population Growth crew? There are lot of the deluded ZPG people out there.

That said, it's a new approach. Try & try to get feedback.

How about this: "Prop 71 means theft of your tax dollars for corporate welfare at a time when California still struggles to make ends meet. Vote NO on Prop 71."

As an aside, I got a blanket email from a New York pal on this issue. He's a secular Jew deep in the tank with the Dems, and he's advocating YES on 71. Ugh. What do New Yorkers know about CA's financial state?
