COLORADO SPRNIGS - There have been countless reports of sign stealing during this election campaign from both Republicans and Democrats. A private investigator hired to track down the person responsible for taking Republican campaign signs in one Colorado Springs neighborhood caught the culprit on tape and made a surprising discovery.

The woman caught taking down Bush/Cheney and Pete Coors signs turned out the be the wife of the only Democratic state representative from El Paso County. Rep. Mike Merrifield, D-Manitou Springs, confirms that it was his wife who was caught taking the signs.

Merrifield said the signs were placed near his home to harass him. He indicated he would have taken the signs himself, but he was confined to his house for health reasons. He also admitted removing Kent Lambert signs, Merrifield's opponent in the state house race.

State Republican Chair Ted Halaby said Merrifield should step down. The district attorney said she doesn't plan to pursue the matter.

"He indicated he would have taken the signs himself... The district attorney said she doesn't plan to pursue the matter." - This is a freaking joke!

Some lawyers put up a Hanoi John 4x8 on their property next to the Michigan Republican state headquarters in Lansing, a democrat stronghold.

Get the F over it, Mike.

Theft is theft. Even if there's no monitary value to the items.

"when they came for the signs, I said nothing"

"when they vandalized the offices, I said nothing"

"when they committed vote fraud, I said nothing"

"when they harrassed me and those like me, I said nothing"

"when they came for the others, I said nothing"

"when they came for me, there was nobody left to say anything"

If he can't take some cardboard signs being close to his house, he's not going to be able to stand the heat of the office, which disqualifies him, IMO.

I would say that to a Republican too.

If that were a republican the media and the prosecutor would be all over it. What a lame excuse!

This station (KUSA-TV in Denver) also broke the story about the widespread voter fraud in CO. They deserve thanks for reporting the truth.

We have had some really dumb sign thieves in Colorado this year. Since the Colorado Springs area is heavily Republican, this woman probably sunk her husband's campaign. OTOH, their was a Republican who injured himself while out stealing signs and had to be taken to the hospital.

Thieves, as a rule, are not terribly bright. Campaign sign thieves are no exception.

A real woman would try to snag them out of the ground with a 3/4 oz. Rattletrap, 12lb. test, 'trolling' out of the bed of a pick-up at 25mph.
