BOSTON -- A 21-year-old college student died Thursday from injuries she received as police tried to subdue the rowdy crowd outside Fenway Park following the Red Sox's series-clinching win over the Yankees, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Victoria Snelgrove, an Emerson College journalism major from Bridgewater, was injured on Landsdowne Street early Thursday morning as fans poured out of bars and into the streets around Kenmore Square after the final out in Boston's 10-3 win at Yankee Stadium, authorities said.
A spokeswoman for Brigham and Women's Hospital said Snelgrove died there at 12:50 p.m.
Mayor Tom Menino told WBZ-AM that Snelgrove was hit in the head by a "non-lethal weapon," but he did not elaborate. Menino did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press Thursday afternoon.
David Procopio, a spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney, said the office is investigating the incident.
"One factor that is being investigated is whether her injuries were sustained in any way during crowd control measures," Procopio said. "That has not been confirmed or determined yet."
Sixteen people were injured in all, including a police officer whose wounds were not severe, a police spokeswoman said.
Several small fires were set, fireworks shot into the sky, a trash can was thrown at a fast-food restaurant sign and numerous fights broke out.
Boston police reported eight arrests in the neighborhood, mostly for disorderly conduct, though one arrest was reported for assault and battery on a police officer.
David Rosen, a spokesman for Emerson College, said school officials were unsure how Snelgrove died and that the hospital did not provide details of her injuries.
"There are several different accounts of how it happened," he said. "I'm sure the police and the city will conduct a full investigation, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how it happened. It's a great personal tragedy for this individual, her family and her many friends here at the college. We'll mourn her death no matter how it happened."
Rosen said a memorial service was being planned and grief counselors would be on hand to help students deal with Snelgrove's death.
Students also gathered on college campuses around the region following the game.
About 5,000 people flooded the Southwest residential hall complex at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. UMass Sgt. David White said 29 people were arrested. One UMass police officer was injured while making an arrest.
At UMass-Dartmouth, about 2,000 people were dispersed by police using stun grenades and several arrests were made.
In New Hampshire, police made about 15 arrests as crowds got out of hand near Plymouth State University. Police said crowds swarmed the campus and surrounding neighborhoods.
And at the University of Vermont, more than 1,000 people gathered, setting fires, toppling light poles and fences and tipping a van on its side. No injuries were reported. (AP)
A similar article was posted at boston.com (the Globe) via Drudge's site; it adds:
"Mayor Thomas Menino told the news media later this morning that he was considering banning the serving of liquor in bars in the Fenway Park area once any World Series game gets underway"
Red Sox fans, this Pepsi's for you.
May this child rest in peace..
It has also happened in Denver, Oakland, Vancouver, Maryland (after their college team LOST), and other
places. But you may have a point about the "liberal areas".
Howie Carr (syndicated host based in Boston) got a list of those arrested and many were from well-to-do towns (college kids with lots of $$ from mommy and daddy but not much "raising" from them)
RedSox suck. Stupid crazy fans need to watch what the heck their doing. I feel sorry for that poor women. Yankees are still the best MLB team in the USA, even the RedSox know that. We own them. Their fans need to be locked up in their houses if they can't even control themselves.
The Red Sox do not suck. A small minority of their fans do.
(From Boston Herald):
Although she's from Syracuse, N.Y., Boston University student Elise Carlson, 21, is a lifelong Red Sox fan.
``The Yanks got spanked,'' she gloated. ``Boston is out of control. Boston is going to burn down. Boston cannot wish for anything more. We've got it and we deserve it.''
Fans lit Yankees T-shirts on fire and ignited fireworks while others danced on top of cars leaving them dented and damaged.
Boston police took several people into custody as bottles rained down onto Lansdowne Street from atop the Green Monster inside the park. A woman, apparently pelted with one of the bottles, was left bloodied on the sidewalk.
A fire was set in front of Pizzeria Uno in Kenmore Square, and young fans danced around the flames.

(take a poll--how many of these people are voting for
Kerry...?)
>>Yankees are still the best MLB team in the USA
So, are you going with Mussina in Game 8? :)
Kerry has a plan...

How about a World Series victory? I guess that's in the realm of the unthinkable.
Oh geez that was hilarious. Let me right it down. Oh goodness, oh goodness, that was great..
Sorry you can't admit the Yankees are the best team. They are. You Bosox's can't own up to it. LOL! 'Who's Your Daddy?'
When the Yanks beat Boston in the ALCS last year there was no rioting....
I'll leave it up to you to figure out why.
That's why we'll be watching George Steinbrenner in his skybox next week, right?
>>How about a World Series victory? I guess that's in the realm of the unthinkable
Give us a week and we'll get back to you. After being down
3-0 and one inning away from elimination (the day after being beaten 19-8), the Sox managed four straight wins,
the last 2 taking place in Yankee Stadium. And, as Mr.
Sinatra once sang, if they can make it there they can make it...anywhere...
down 0-3, I mean...(trying to type and watch NLCS game at same time!)
A person is killed by a "non-lethal weapon"?
Well I'm not proud of the people who rioted last night (and also the ones who rioted Super Bowl night)--the thing is, the vast majority of New Englanders _didn't_ ...BUT
it took a couple thousand jerks to give us a bad name.
Why does this happen? Why do these people think they can
just cause anarchy in the streets like that? (Take a poll of them and see how many are liberal and how many
are conservative... :) ) Are they being brought up
right? Or is this just youthful energy--and booze--
and poor judgement. Add it all up...
Booze may indeed be part of it (comic Jimmy Tingle--
yes, a lib, but bear with me did a bit on alcohol
abuse once and pointed out how some people use anything as an excuse to booze it up. "We won the game! We lost the
game! THE GAME GOT RAINED OUT!!")...but so is the lack
of respect these kids show authority. They think they can do whatever the heck they want.
Now the FACTS are that a single car was burned following the Tigers' (yes THOSE Tigers) World Series win in 1984. ONE CAR! But some fat A**hole named Bubba (we might have taken THAT as a warning!) posed for the press and the rest, as they say, is history.
Since then, riots have erupted throughout the country following championship wins or losses, but only Detroit gets the rap.
And in Boston, this young woman died. Take a look at the facts: Detroit has the best-mannered sports fans in the US (hey, we've learned to be humble!)
Go Pistons!
