Fire Halts Service At Penn Station
SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2004
Train service to and from Penn Station has been shut down due to power problems caused by a fire in a nearby tunnel.
All Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit trains are affected.
The fire broke out in a tunnel at 30th Street and First Avenue at about 1 p.m., knocking out power to track signals.
It is unclear when regular service will resume. In the meantime, LIRR tickets are good for subway transfers at stations in Queens, and PATH trains between New Jersey and Manhattan are accepting New Jersey Transit tickets.

going down in the tubes now, keep you posted
BREAKING PING.
Amtrak/LIRR affected by possible transformer explosion - no casualty report yet.
We have transformers blow up several times a year around here. Is it uncommon there?
ABC radio calling it a trash fire on the tracks in the tunnel. Five hurt.
When the evil PCB was eliminated it was predicted that transformer thermal expansion would cause case ruptures and fires but the fearful pressed ever onward.
Keep the updates coming!
transformer explosion!
Omigosh!
I've been there in both Baltimore and Tulsa!

LIRR, Amtrak, N.J. Transit service halted out of Penn Station

Penn Station has been evacuated and Long Island Rail Road, Amtrak and N.J. Transit train service has been suspended from the Station amid reports of a fire and power outtages.
A witness said he heard two large explosions shortly before 1 p.m. at 30th Street and 1st Avenue, where an Amtrak ventilation unit is located. "It was big whatever is," said Stephen O'Rourke. A fire then erupted in the area, officials said.
LIRR officials said the shutdown stemmed from a power and signal cable outtage on the Amtrak tracks in Long Island City. A call to Amtrak was not immediately returned.
LIRR service between Penn Station and Jamaica has been closed down.
New York City subways and PATH trains are running.
LIRR tickets are being accepted on the subways and N.J. Transit tickets are being honored on the PATH lines, said railroad spokesman Brian Dolan. He encouraged riders to travel to Flatbush or Woodside to reach east-bound LIRR trains.
The problems were first reported at 12:55, p.m., Dolan said.
According to New Jersey Transit all of its Northeast Corridor trains are being stopped at the Secaucus station. The railroad is telling its passengers to take the PATH trains to and from Newark, N.J., and then get connecting trains.
Thank God - my husband took the ferry today.
Transformer fires/explosions are more common during the winter when road salt filters down below the streets. In '93 when the first TC bomb went off we all thought it was a PATH transformer going.

Run them up on the redline 24/7 year after year and never put clean oil in them and they'll blow up real good.
It sounds like this might be more serious than what I was talking about where you just lose electricity:'(
Transformers blow up quite frequently in cities.
And in suburbs too.
There really is no need to try and hype this into some type of run-for-the-hills type of story.
