The Fall Of The Big Media (Joseph Farah's Better Than Dan Rather, Folks)
Worldnetdaily.com ^ | 09/14/04 | Joseph Farah

I was wrong.

When I'm wrong, I admit it.

And I was wrong.

Five months ago, I predicted John Kerry would win the presidential election. I really thought he would for several reasons:

President Bush's record – especially on domestic issues – was weak. He didn't show any desire to curtail illegal immigration. He even proposed yet another amnesty program, an idea entirely unpopular with the American people at any time, but I thought politically lethal at a time when the country is facing dramatic terrorist attacks. He also increased spending on a host of programs for which there is no constitutional justification.

I expected Kerry to put on a convention show similar to those orchestrated by the Clinton-Gore campaigns of 1992, 1996 and 2000. I believed Kerry would get a significant bounce from such a spectacle. I never expected him to make Vietnam the cornerstone of his campaign.

Most of all, I thought the Big Media would be there to sustain that anticipated bounce and to propel the Kerry campaign forward with partisan relish.

I guess my biggest mistakes were over-estimating Kerry and his friends in the Big Media.

The Big Media just ain't what it used to be.

And I should know. I should have seen it. After all, I've been a big part of the New Media for the last seven years – developing real news alternatives to the monopoly formerly held by a cartel of elitist corporations with a strong ideological agenda and partisan bias.

What I failed to calculate into the equation was the impact of the Swift Boat vets.

I certainly knew John O'Neill and company had some surprises in store for us. Beginning way back last spring, before "Unfit for Command" became the No. 1 best-seller in the nation, the author and his Vietnam vet comrades in arms were frequent guests on my national radio program.

I just wasn't sure how they would get the message out.

But they did – demonstrating irrefutably the new clout of the New Media. Capitalizing on the combined power of the Internet and talk radio – and, most importantly, a compelling message – the Swift Boat vets revealed enough about the true character of John Kerry to ensure he would never be president.

When his polls went south, Kerry's Big Media friends got desperate.

There was Dan Rather of CBS News' "60 Minutes" breaking a story based on fraudulent memos about George W. Bush's National Guard service. Rather and CBS refused to admit they'd allowed themselves to be hoodwinked – or, worse yet, had deliberately perpetrated a hoax on the American people for political reasons.

Then there was the questionable Associated Press story quoting veterans who supposedly were more concerned about Bush's service record than Kerry's. Serious questions have been raised about the identity of one of those vets – supposedly a Navy SEAL who had become a Muslim and changed his name.

The Big Media tried it all this year – from sensationalizing the Abu Ghraib prison scandal to ignoring fundamental questions about Kerry's record and character.

But it was to no avail.

Because the Big Media has lost its grip on the soul of the nation. Because it no longer has the credibility required to perpetrate its frauds. Because good people stood up to the onslaught and courageously told their stories through alternative venues. Because there were alternative venues.

Now I know Kerry is destined to lose this election. But there's even better news for the country. I think Kerry could very well take the Big Media down with him.

Oh, I know CBS and AP and the New York Times are not about to disappear overnight when their candidate loses the election Nov. 2. That process will take more time. But the process has begun. They are going down, those Old Media institutions. They are going the way of the dinosaur. And, when they do, they will have nobody to blame but themselves – and, perhaps John Kerry.

Joseph Farah IS better than Dan Rather, folks. Now its true he's not backing President Bush for re-election. But in contrast to rather, he has no axe to grind in this election. So he admits he was wrong in predicting Kerry would win in November. Why hasn't it turned out to be a sure bet? First, Kerry made Vietnam his pet issue. Second, the Big Media in its partisan relish to put their Golden Boy in the White House got carried away with a story that exploded in their faces. Finally, the Swift Boat Vets showed there was less to Kerry's war hero status than met the eye. All of which in Joe's humble estimation comes down to one thing: the Old Media is going down and they're going to take Kerry along with them. It will be sweet to celebrate the aftermath on November 3rd. As I said, Joseph Farah beats Dan Rather any day cause he's a journalist with guts and integrity. Welcome to the world of the New Media being born all around us. We live in exciting times.

Outed right here on Free Republic, as was Memogate, as was the bogus AP booing story.

Precisely. The adults are finally in charge. That's us. We're watching the watchers (i.e. the old guard news media).

Big media's fall began with the Clinton Regime. Here was the most corrupt liar ever to occupy the office and the Redstream media attacked the truth tellers instead of the crooks. After watching the nightly news most of my life I stopped watching soon after Clinton was elected. The irony is that while the internet bubble inflated the economy and therefore Clinton, that same internet has become the RATS chief headache!

The internet bubble was a result of Moores' Law. By the early '90s microprocessors had gotten cheap enough for all sorts of new applications. Clinton had absolutely nothing to do with it. What irritated me the most about Clinton was his tendency to take credit for everything that happended in the US regardless of its plausibility. He even affected the timing of the NASA announcement of possible evidence of life on Mars so he could pretend he was responsible for it.

I disagree. He certainly had nothing to do with the growth of the bubble BUT he's the one who popped the bubble by launching an antitrust case against Microsoft. The resulting recession was blamed on Bush by the redstream media of course.

Freeprs are the new wave. We are hip, dilligent, insightful, and -- despite our blatant partisanship -- pretty darned honest about the truth by in large.

I could not agree more with your assessment. Farah is an honest man who is willing to admit he can be wrong about things - which puts him about 10 levels higher on the inyegrity scale than Hurricane Dan. He has correctly analyzed the situation here.

I know he doesn't support Bush for re-election, for reasons I respect and understand quite well. I happen to disagree with him here (respectfully), but only because Kerry, as the courageous Swiftboat Vets have pointed out in another act of service to their beloved country, is so completely unfit for the mantle of the presidency.

Let's not be overconfident, though. Kerry, though seriously damaged, could still win this Novemeber - not the least reason of which is the continued insanity of Bush and the entire Republican establishment's refusal the fight the Dem machine in any meaningful way. Despite massive and blatant voter fraud, illegal election eering in black churches, regitering illegal aliens and other non-citizens o vote, the Republican milquetoasts, esemplified by Bill Frist (with Bush's tacit apprival) continue to cave to leftists on issue after issue.

Because Kerry and Co. are so horrible, Bush and the Republicans deserve another term. After the election, though, the gloves come off on Bush, Rove, and he entire gang of liberals pretending tp be conservative/

Did you happen to catch Brit Hume tonight? He had Mr. Johnson on from the Powerline blog (most excellent, IMO), and mentioned LittleGreenFootballs and other various bloggers.

No mention of FR or message board/forums -- talk about your levels of fact checkers! Try and get away with shaky info here, and you'll immediately get flamed by people doing the research -- who in turn are subject to the same scrutiny!

Nice SEAL work, BTW. ;o)

Joseph Farah IS better than Dan Rather, folks.

Farah ran one of the news outlets that smeared McCain during the 2000 election.

No, Mr. Farah, you biggest mistakes were under-estimating Bush and his supporters in Pajamas.

Moore's Law and Intel are the basis for the whole Internet boom. I do, however, want to thank AlGore because if he had not invented the Internet, we all would not be here (Free Republic) to serve and protect the USA. Thanks, Al!!!!! You'da man!
