"This group will do more harm than good. Will be tagged as racist.

I agree with you dc-zoo. Besides the charge of racism is the problem of reasonableness. I know, many in FR believe we should lock everyone up and throw the key away. This is not the way it works and someone, with as good as possible professional advice, must decide to release some even before the sentence is over.

This a humane, and IMHO, Christian approach to criminals and sinners. Unfortunately, you might release 100 and then find one that does not make it or otherwise proves harmful to others. Then the press preys on fear and loathing in the public arena to crucify those that were just doing the best job they could in a difficult area of jurisprudence.

It was wrong for Al Gore to use Willie Horton on his opponent, it was wrong for Bush I to use Willie Horton against his opponent and it will be wrong if these well meaning people use this on our opponent.

Here's a New Yorker article that discusses details of the case.

found at: http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?040510fa_fact1

“Roanne was the court-appointed attorney, and I was the helper,” Kerry said. “She did the lion’s share of the work, but that case taught me a lot.” Several mornings, around dawn, Sragow and Kerry prowled the loading docks in South Boston, looking for an alibi witness, a man who had refused to testify for the defense at the first trial because he was wanted by loan sharks. They eventually found him, but the turning point in the case came when they learned that Silky Sullivan, who had died of leukemia in prison in 1972, had sought out a priest for a deathbed confession.

Kerry and Sragow researched the law and found that if Sullivan had spoken to the priest in a “non-sacramental” setting the conversation would not be protected by the priest-penitent privilege. They tracked down the priest, the Reverend Edward Cowhig, who signed an affidavit saying that Sullivan “stated that Mr. Reissfelder was not involved in the incident at Railway Express in Boston, and that he was sorry that Mr. Reissfelder had been convicted for something he didn’t do.” Cowhig said that he hadn’t come forward for eight years because he “was aware of the existing climate toward any inmate who said he ‘didn’t do it’ even if a ‘do-gooder’ chaplain endorsed and corroborated it.” During Reissfelder’s years in prison, his wife divorced him, his parents died, and his children were placed in foster care.

I thought it was a restriction on the size of contributions, an individual could only give like 2,000.

Soros had to give his money up front to a 527.

I don't believe either of these ads are useful. The Kerry one is disjointed and as the guy didn't kill the cop (even though he tried) it doesn't seem as strong. The one about Sharpton seems to attempt guilt by association too much. Kerry is guilty of many things on his own, plain and simple. If they want to get on Kerry, how about his assassination plot to kill Senators (in KS I believe it was). Or his meeting with the North Vietnamese while we still had troops in the field, or his being given information about poor security at the Boston airport shortly before 9/11...what did he do with the information? Or his nearly 20 years in the senate with nothing to show for it except the most liberal record of all amongst current senators.

Why does the little graphic of film at the bottom of moveonforamerica.org's home page have a picture of a saluting Adolph Hitler in it?

Well . . I'm not a DU Troll. (the lurker may have just had enough with folks who are easily manipulated)

and I agree . . .

Kerry is 11 points behind.

Kerry is going to go negative in a bad way.

The only way to go negative at this point without suffering from implosion is to change the subject....

Bring back the old democrat "Republicans are racist" and "like father, like son" with regard to Willie Horton.

This 527 should release their top 10 donor list. I bet you'll find George Soros.

btw, do a google on the people identfied in the 527. I think you'll find some interesting information.

From the website.....(don't know if precisely right ):

Since the organization is a “non-connected” committee, the ads will run non-stop until Election Day, and are not subject to the McCain-Feingold ban during the campaign’s final 60 days.

OK..."revise and extend" my previous, please!

I'm convinced from this and previous linked discussions that these ads are a bad idea, for all the reasons cited...Marks may be a "turncoat", or simply a "tin ear"...or perhaps his website was hacked with bogus ads? But in any case, if these ads are as bad as you all say they are, it will not only cause a backlash for the Bush/Cheney campaign, but also on all the other 527-type groups...the MSM will get back on their soapbox telling W to "call off" these people (never mind that would be illegal) and trumpeting that "you can't trust these (conservative) 527's like MoveOnForAmerica and the (totally legitimate) SBVfT"...

Most unhelpful. Even giving Marks the benefit of the doubt, he needs a reality check...this is one 527 group the "old media" will certainly give plenty of coverage to...

Agree, Kerry is most vulnerable on character and what he did in the Viet Nam war and after wards speaks volumes about his character.

Too many cooks can definitely spoil the soup Kerry is in.

Since Kerry made Viet Nam the issue IMHO stick with the Swifties.

Don't know anything about Marks. I emailed him, but no reply yet.

From what I've determined so far, he actually lives in the Nashville and/or the DC area.

well, its just a gut feeling, I don't see how a Willie Horton ad could in any way help the president. The only thing it could do is cause a backlash
