Bo Derek was interviewed by Shep Smith of Fox News and said that she couldn't understand why Al-Qaeda is attacking us. If it wasn't for us they would have been part of the Soviet Union.

Exactly. If the Russians won, Afghanistan would be a breakaway state right now, far worse than it currently is. Hindsight being what it is, 20 years ago Russia was the enemy. Now terrorists and radical Islam is the enemy of all mankind.

Thanks for the clarification -- the title of this post had me scratching my head there for a moment. It sounded like the implication was that Al Queda and the Soviet Union would have been in cahoots had it not been for us -- and knowing how both those groups hate each other guts (score one point for the commies) this just did not compute.

The only Hollywood star (at least I seen) that visited Reagans coffin while lying in state, in the capital rotunda. (I`m not talking about the service.) She took the time to stand in that huge line, unlike Kerry who cut ahead of everyone and stepped over the ropes with his photographer for a photo op.

Actually, she's wrong. Most of the people who make up al Qaeda would still be sitting in Saudi Arabia.
Had we not introduced the mujadi's to the Stinger missle, the Jihadists would still be fighting the Soviet Union.
At least she knows the Soviets invaded Afhganistan, seems a lot here don't!

Al Qaeda is an organization that had bases in and operated out of a sovereign nation called Afghanistan. Many of the people who compose the group Al Qaeda lived in this nation when the Soviets were there.
So, Dereks point is entirely valid.
Sure, we backed the mujahadeen but only as a means of sticking it to the Soviets
Our motive has no bearing on Derek's statement. More than a few of those guys who fought the Soviets are fighting us now. That doesn't mean that we're wrong for sticking it to the Reds, but it does mean that the Muj are ingrates because, (say it with me)

The same way Solidarity came under the control of the USSR. If we hadn't taken on the Soviet Union they would have been more than willing to use their surrogates in Yemen and elsewhere in the Horn of Africa to takeover Saudi Arabia. They also would have succeeded in their drive to the Indian Ocean through Afghanistan and Iran
