It would be interesting to know your thoughts on the matter.
Is Paul Fleuranges right to object to: "the survey's methodology" and "with how some of the data is used?"
Here are some of the criteria that were used to assess the value of a train ride.
1. Cleanliness
2. Scheduled service
3. Regularity of arrivals
4. Breakdowns
5. mechanical failures
and,
6. Chance of getting a seat during rush hour.

Crime/risk of crime should be added to the list.

The lex line is great, all those IRT trains really fly. Also the D train is pretty good once it gets north of 42nd Street. We used to take it to Yankee Stadium all the time. You can get there in a flash.
The NYC subway system is a great system of Mass transit. I hear things are even better in Europe, but I wonder if there is a better system in the US. One thing planners elsewhere would do well to remember (Hudson-Bergen Light Rail people and NJT Bus Operators, I'm talking to you) is that to be really an alternative to cars mass transit systems MUST run 24 hours a day.

When I lived in NYC I found the Number 6 to be clean, fast and efficient. OTOH, the Number 2 was just that. :o)

Okay, what are we doing here? Talking about our commutes with public transit maybe? That's what I'm going to do.
I usually start by taking the 23 bus up to the Market East station. The reasons for this are:
1. It's only a half a block walk.
2. There's a six foot Glamazon that oftentimes rides that bus and a nurse who's smoking hot that I like to stalk.
3. I use a day pass and the cow at the subway booth takes, literally about 3 minutes to process my day pass and missing a train while she's looking around for her stamp gets me in a psycotic mood. Not a good way to start the day.
4. Sometimes, the bus driver doesn't want to deal with processing the daypass and just hands me a transfer. When that happens, I've figured out a way to re-use the daypass time and again. For some reason, when I just pay the fair and the transfer, it never works out. Somebody always takes the day pass and stamps the hell out of it. So when I'm just handed the transfer, I take it.
Either way, I pick up the el and past city hall it's virtually empty. I always sit on the north side to keep the sun off me.
Then, I get on the Route 100 trolly (the old main line). There's this really slutty looking latina chick with an amazing body that I like to stalk. She usually stands at the back of the train so if I can get an aisle seat on the north, maybe second from the back, well, it just doesn't get any better than that.
Then I take the 95 bus. That's a short ride and most of the drivers blast the a/c so I'm pretty good there. They always drop me off on the corner rather than at the bus stop and that's a lot closer to my office.
The way home is pretty much the same thing, except I almost never see the slutty latina chick.

The sexual reference is blatantly obvious - appealing to the homosexual deviants to ride?
It's a very sick society up there.

The joy of living and working in Brooklyn is that I don't have to deal with the subway. I get to drive my truck to most destinations. Except when I have to go into Manhattan, then I have to take the sub.
The problem with New York city is that in the outer boroughs mass transit sucks. The subways all head towards Manhattan and there are no cross borough lines to connect the lines. The result is that if you don't have a car in the outer boroughs, getting around is a pain.

My fav lines are still the 1/9 for non-express service. Sure its crowded by there are several trains running. The 6 is ALWAYS packed, being the only local on the East Side.
The N(ever) and R(arely) going through Brooklyn are the WORST. Poor service, frequent stops due to "congestion" and the most run-down stations in the city.

I have very little experience on this subject. I stay out of tunnels because the Gypsy Woman told my momma that I would be hit by an asteroid in a tunnel.
I wish I could be more help but it's for my health.

Isn't 6. Chance of getting a seat during rush hour. a Yogi Berra-ism? I mean, No one goes there anymore, its too crowded.
