I n the beginning, when Debra Beasley Lafave was first charged with having sex with one of her Greco Middle School students, I frankly wondered if the 14-year-old - unnamed because of his age and the allegation that he was the victim of a sex crime - was telling the truth. It was certainly possible many thought that the charges were the public equivalent of an adolescent erotic dream - a story of having sex with an older, attractive teacher made up by the boy to impress his friends.
The attention Lafave, 23, obviously lavished on the kid could certainly be construed by an immature mind to be more than just the innocent concern of a teacher for a student.
All kids, male and female, daydream.
Most of those flights of fancy are pretty innocent. Some, however, can in an instant turn innocent glances into passionate stares and casual conversations into torrid love affairs.
Yuck Factor High
But when the Marion County Sheriff's Office issued an arrest warrant for Lafave on Friday on charges stemming from alleged sexual encounters with the 14- year-old in a car being driven around Ocala by the boy's 15-year- old cousin, it became harder to believe that Lafave was the victim of some Playboy-like inventiveness on the boy's part gone awry.
In fact, it became easier for me to believe that Lafave, who turned herself in to Marion County authorities Monday, did, in fact, have sex with a 14-year-old.
If the allegations are true - and it certainly seems as if there was some inappropriate behavior demonstrated by Lafave - you have to wonder what she was thinking.
Or was she thinking at all?
This, after all, is a boy.
Not a man.
Sure. If she were 33 and he were 24, any relationship between them would be part of the growing trend of older women dating younger men.
But that isn't the case.
So she is expected to meet the same cultural and legal standards that men are: to avoid sexual encounters with minors.
Or pay the legal and cultural consequences.
Not This Kind Of Activity
What makes this story particularly compelling is that it is so aberrant.
Mary Kay Letourneau, the Washington teacher in prison for a long-term sexual relationship with a 13-year-old student with whom she has two children, notwithstanding.
Women are far more often the victims of sex crimes. Not the predators.
But though men are most often arrested for crimes in general, women seem to be ``coming into their own,'' as it were, in all types of crimes.
According to an FBI report issued in 2003, women are increasingly involved in criminal activity.
While crime in general remained relatively steady and men remained the overwhelming leaders in criminal activity during 2002, the number of women arrested during that period rose to 23 percent of the total.
From 1993 to 2002, the number of women arrested increased almost 14 percent while the number of men arrested fell 6 percent.
This is not exactly the kind of gender equity most women strive so hard for.
Don't look for this type of situation to let up. Young teachers and even younger boys who are looking to score aren't going to complain.
I hereby volunteer to be this teacher's next "victim"!
Free Debra!
LOL!!!! You guys are something else ;-)
Yowza. This woman would be every middle-school boy's fantasy as a teacher, she's quite attractive indeed. Which makes it all the more slimy that she'd take advantage of a 14-year-old, because you KNOW the 14-year-old is going to almost certainly think it's a dream come true.
"Got it bad, soooooo bad...I'm hot for teacher..."

It would appear that old "Slick Willie" was just doing what comes natural (at least to his twisted sense of morality).
At any rate, it would appear that most males enjoy this kind of innocent social contact (oral sex) with a girl as pretty as Ms. Debra.
Free Debra!
That's why the egalitarians are delusional. You want 50% of US Senators to be women? You want 50% of surgeons to be women? You want 50% of the CEOs at Fortune 500 companies to be women?
Then you can have 50% of the death row inmates be women. 50% of the combat casualties can be women. 50% of the coal miners can be women.
What? You want the good stuff and not the bad stuff?? Saaaaaay .. what kind of egalitatian ARE you?
The cat that swallowed the mouse, I presume. Something has wiped that grin off of her face.
GULP !! WHY did I not have a teacher like that in middle school. (Sarcasm) <- I think
You are going to catch hell, bub. I do, however, agree!
"Then you can have 50% of the death row inmates be women. 50% of the combat casualties can be women. 50% of the coal miners can be women."
I like the way you think.
She's a pedophile, just the same as any man who would take advantage of a 14 year old girl. She should be labeled as a sex offender, and do some serious jail time.
If an adult did that to my son when he was 14, facing a court of law would be the least of her problems.
For whatever it's worth, I believe this is misleading. Nothing has changed. What we are seeing now is greater publicity for this activity due to the influence of gay inroads into everything, together with the wussification of the American male.
Short version: young males now blab more readily.
Darn. Why couldn't this have happened to me in HS?
Oh well, now she can sell her story to make a CBS "Shocking Movie O' the Week" for a few million and retire. Little old ladies can watch intently to make sure they savor every bit of outrage as the TV light plays off their faces. Perhaps that's her plan.
Well, what else domen have to think about that's pleasant and keeps our motivation going?
*chuckle*
I bet the boy rues the day he opened his big fat mouth and thereby ended his days of wine and roses for at least the next five years. His punishment will be at least as bad as hers. No more sex for you, buddy.
She looks like a backup singer for Robert Palmer.
