I have heard crazy lefties say that not a single American soldier was killed in Germany post surrender. Info like this proves them wrong but never gets them to admit it or stop their spreading of lies.

I wrote about this in my column, more than six months ago. The general thesis was quite simple: the lamestream media are incompetent mainly because they do not report the CONTEXT of stories.

And when the subject is war and occupation, the nearest analogy to Iraq in 2004 is Germany in 1946. Any competent reporter should know and report this. I rest my case.

I was in Austria occupation. Number of combat deaths also zero. Regarding Iraq - Private Lynch was not Rambo either.

I agree we couldn't get away with it. As far as I know, if an enemy combatant is not wearing a uniform, then they are not protected by the Geneva Convention. No rules apply, and they may be summarily executed.

I could be wrong, but everyone at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib could have been shot upon capture. And if we started doing that ("Because we could"), the world's outrage would be deafening -- yet we would not be violating international law.

Because of bad planning by American officers and mistakes by the Royal Navy, over 900 American troops were killed during 'Operation Tiger'. 'Tiger' was a practice exercise for D-Day held at Slapton Sands, England. In the early A.M. of April 28 1944, 7 LSTs packed with troops from the U.S. VII corps and escorted by only one outdated Corvette, were attacked by German E-Boats. By the time the shooting had stopped the E-Boats had retired without loss and 946 GIs were dead . . .

I had a Marine Corps buddy that sported a Purple Heart he received in WWII in Germany when he was shot by a 12 year old Werewolf. It was my understanding the boy never got any older and was never allowed to surrender, although he tried.

... the total number of post-conflict American combat casualties in Germany—and Japan, Haiti, and the two Balkan cases—was zero...what, exactly, is a "post-conflict" "combat" casualty - this seems just a wee bit disingenuous - if the conflict is over then by definition casualties wouldn't be classified as "combat" - I saw just a little of this History Channel presentation, but it showed clearly that up to two years after the official end of the war in Germany there were resistance groups made up primarily of ex-soldiers and "Hitler Youth" setting off bombs and other lethal operations behind the lines in the hopes of driving out the "occupiers" - it's difficult to believe that there weren't many American casualties during this period, just as there are today in Iraq - only thing that's changed I'd bet is that back then we didn't have a bunch of foolish partisans yelling for us to give up and come home before the job was finished.....

Don't sweat the error ("Stalin" should read "Mussolini" per your correction reply), but I was thinking that you were looking for photos of the Romanian dictator Cecausqui (sp?) and his wife who were given quick justice in 1989. Maybe Saddam could contemplate photos of their demise as well.

The History Channel documentary in question claims that, "The desperate effort to resist occupation had lasted for more than two years. Over 40 American soldiers were killed."

The documentary was fascinating. It should be required viewing for today's Iraqi war critics. The years following our victory in Germany were nightmarish and chaotic: Riots, starvation, overwhelming unemployment, looting, terror bombings, intimidation and murder of Germans who helped the allies, bitter resentment of the occupation forces, growing pessimism of the American public ... sounds familar.
