Unless one's Congressman is a committeed Christian, letters and emails revolving around those arguments will fall on deaf ears. Most lawmakers need to hear the several Constitutional arguments that are included on the thread, such as the crucial one you excerpted:

"According to constitutional experts, HR 4200---Hate Crimes Bill--establishes a dangerous constitutional precedent - allowing for two trials against a person accused of a crime, say, against homosexuals (among others)."

Just this week, A Senate defense bill was amended to include the "Hate Crimes" bill and was passed by the Senate on a vote of 97-0.

That means the next step for this anti-Christian legislation is the House. It’s imperative that Christians contact their representatives urging them not to support such legislation.

The House defense authorization bill is H.R. 4200. Make sure your representative knows that you do not support hate crimes amendment to H.R. 4200.

TWO VITAL ACTIONS ARE NECESSARY:

(1) Contact your Representative at the Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121

(2) Contact House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, urging him not to allow this legislation to come to a vote. This legislation cannot move without his permission.

Actually - I don't see a need for any sort of hate crime legislation. A crime is a crime, regardless of who commits it against whom. If a heterosexual kills a homosexual, for whatever reason, it's murder - same as if a homosexual kills a heterosexual. To pile on additional punishment because the the crime is committed against someone because of their ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion, or anything simply gives that class more status than the person who committed the crime. In other words, to say that a heterosexual should have more jail time for killing a homosexual, than he or she would for killing another heterosexual is simply wrong.

As far as it turning into a thought crime issue, it's already happening in Europe. A Swedish pastor served jail time for preaching against homosexuality. Canada is in the process of adopting similar laws, if they haven't done so already. It's not far down the road for the US.

Actually, the biggest problem with "hate crimes" legislation is that it ends up providing two different penalties for the exact same act ~ the difference resting on what the criminal said about the victim, provided, of course, that the "victim" be in the protected class of people about whom such things cannot be said.

What this does is CONFER A TITLE OF NOBILITY on the protected class.

I thought we got over that Medieval class stuff a long time ago. Apparantly we didn't, but there it is. No doubt Teddy "Fitzgerald" Kennedy wants the class system returned to what he believes to be it's rightful place.

Remember, in the bad old days the "upper class nobles" got to murder whomever they wished without any question.

People who support the return of an old fashioned European class system should probably be horsewhipped and ridden out of town on a rail.

"Liberals hate conservatives" bill? At 97-0, I guess there are no conservatives in the senate.

The only way to stop this and all the other crap that comes out of Washington is thru civil-disobedience, and the best way is to cut off the money flow. You can write/call/e-mail/fax all you want. Until their pocketbooks are hit, you will gain very little if nothing at all.

It's a shame there are so few willing to risk (unlawful) prosecution to stop the usury and the illegal monstrous spending of this government.

Until we stop the flow, unconstitutional laws will continue to be enacted.

I agree with pretty much all of your first paragraph. I don't see why someone beating another person with a tire iron while screaming "dirty n-----!" should get a more severe penalty than someone beating another person with a tire iron "merely" because of marital infidelity or a bad debt or whatever.

What I was objecting to was the hyperbolic claims in the original post, such as the idea that this legislation is particularly aimed at Christians, or that it would outlaw public Bible readings.

Recall that this same bill was defeated in 2002. Its backers are like the ghouls in the George Romero cult film classic, "Night of The Living Dead." You beat them back but they still keep coming.

The reason for the 97-0 Senate vote is b/c the "hate crimes" bill was sneaked into a defense appropriation bill as an amendment. There was a lot of stealth politics being conducted by the bill's backers.
