Saying the name George W. Bush aloud in various countries and American states can lead to very different reactions, ranging from trusting adulation in the American South to hate-filled scorn in many countries. But, regardless of Bush's extremely controversial war and domestic taxation policies, all can support his recently announced goal to get most Americans a personal electronic health record to be accessed and used by patients and health professionals alike. In a speech in April 2004, the President correctly described the current healthcare communication and record keeping system of the United States as "antiquated" and set a 10-year goal of a secure electronic record that can be accessed online and will include patients' medical history, laboratory test and diagnostic imaging results, electronic prescribing, and other key elements. The respected Dr. David Brailer has been appointed as the US government health information Czar who is to manage the effort. In the interest of full disclosure, the owner of Medscape, WebMD, has had the same vision for many years and offers a variety of products that can help to make Bush's goal a reality. I don't know about you, the reader, but I would sure rather have an improved healthcare system as my legacy than a bloody Middle East quagmire or a huge national debt. That's my opinion. I'm Dr. George Lundberg, Editor of MedGenMed.

As for me, I'd just as soon have the freeing of millions of oppressed Iraquis, a strong national economy AND the improvement of the national healthcare system as my legacy.

Just can't keep from getting in a dig, can they?
