SAG Pres. Melissa Gilbert on passing of former SAG President Ronald Reagan (barf alert)
Screen Actors Guild (SAG) ^ | 6/7/04 | Melissa Gilbert

Posted on 06/07/2004 11:45:32 AM PDT by Wolfstar

Los Angeles, CA (June 5, 2004) – Screen Actors Guild (SAG) President Melissa Gilbert issued the following statement on the death of former President Ronald Reagan, who served as president of SAG from 1947 to 1952 and again from 1959 to 1960:

"Ronald Reagan presided over Screen Actors Guild at one of the most challenging moments in our union's history, as the rise of television significantly impacted the compensation and working conditions for the nation's screen actors. Under his tenure, SAG grew significantly in size and influence as the Guild tackled issues ranging from runaway production, to fair compensation, to unity in an increasingly complex industry – all issues that remain timely to working actors today.

"It can be said that Ronald Reagan got his start in politics at Screen Actors Guild. He served as president of the union twice, from 1947 to 1952 and again from 1959 to 1960. While President Reagan's politics grew conservative over the years and, at times, at odds with the nation's labor movement, there can be no question that he devoted years of his life to advancing the wages, benefits and working conditions of his fellow actors. He leaves behind an enduring legacy to this industry, as he does to the country as a whole. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today."

Actually, I think her statement was right on. She's actually one of the more conservative members of that Hollywood union.

What part of this statement is not true? Reagan's politics did change and grow.

I missed the slap also.

Conservative...at odds with the nation's labor movement...

Who says the Screen Actor's Guild gets to define the nation's labor movement. I own a business. I labor. I did very well under Reagan. Leftists slap you by making you take their assumptions for granted, something you missed.

Yes. She's the current president of SAG and a liberal Democrat

You know this or you're just making crap up?

My conservatism has grown over the years also. I don't consider that a slap.

I this this is just the kind of statment that President Reagan would have considered appropriate. It is short, accurate, and respectful.

I saw her giving a speech some time ago, and I find it hard to believe she's a conservative.

I think you're being ridiculous.

Fine! Then leave me to my ridiculousness and move on.

Well June, the last time you stated that Ward was being a little hard on the Beaver. Now which is it?

I don't think that she's a conservative. She did help with Jerry Doyle's campaign for Congress a few years ago. Jerry ran as a Republican. However, I think that she and her husband, Bruce Boxleitner, helped out of personal loyalty to Jerry. Boxleitner and Doyle were castmates on Babylon 5.

Yep, real nasty infighting. She won, but wasn't allowed to take her seat. They bottled the whole thing up in courts for years. Kind of like that hag booted from the EROC who refused to comply with the rules. BTW, is she still on the payroll? Is that balance of term appointment lady still insane, refusing to let the new appointee take seat?

Wolfstar, I respect your wish to protect one of our nation's greatest presidents, but I think you are being a little too sensitive in this case. The tribute was glowing, but it wasn't an Danny Blubber attack, either.

(1) She is the current president of the Screen Actors Guild. Look it up. (2) She is a liberal Democrat. Her husband, Bruce Boxleitner, is a Republican. He has said a number of times in interviews that they don't discuss politics at home.

Here is the slap: "While President Reagan's politics grew conservative over the years and, at times, at odds with the nation's labor movement..."

Reagan did grow more conservative over the years, and at times this did put him at odds with the nation’s labor movement.

Reagan himself made both those points when talking about his political growth.

Thank you. At least someone gets it. I didn't expect the kind of hostility I see on this thread, or I wouldn't have put it up.
