Would Ronald Reagan have appreciated FreeRepublic?
I've thought about this for the past few days and I have to answer no. We have gotten too negative, too nasty, and too petty and small-minded.
I've been registered as PolitBase since March but have followed the discussion since 1999. Every now and again -- particularly with people such as OWK (when was he finally punted off anyway?) I have thought that we reach for something better in ourselves.
But too often it is hatred and pettiness. Do you think Ronald Reagan would ever have said or thought the ugly things that are said about Hillary Clinton or Janet Reno? No -- whatever he may have thought about their politics, he was too much of a gentleman to post or write the ugly things that are said and written here with such ease.
There are times, such as this morning, when I am ashamed by this site.
I sincerely hope there are others here who would welcome this discussion.
Usually comments like this are given as part of an opus. So is this your opus? Not that I'm dropping any hints or anything....

Are you referring to people taking potshots at their looks? Only a small minority around here do that. Criticizing their politics is fair game, even if the criticism is harsh.

Do you think he would have called a first lady "Hitlery"? As much as he would have hated her politics, he never would sink to calling an American that name.

I think that Reagan would appreciate FreeRepublic very much.
We stand behind Conservative principles.
What happened this morning is that I am reminded that it is possible to be Conservative AND decent.
I don't think you're wrong in your frustration. I also think this forum would be nowhere near conservative enough for Reagan.
He suffered from Alzheimers...not blindness.....:)

Odd that you think of OWK as someone reaching for something better.
When I remember his posts, I remember a guy who was a valiant advocate for dopeheads and homosexuals.
I don't believe Reagan would have found him worth keeping around.
One can be conservative and not nasty.
I think Reagan would have called a spade a spade.
I honestly think he would have been disgusted with the klinktons and would have said so.
Basically, it's some person who talks about how good FR used to be, and how hateful it's gotten, and gosh, isn't it awful, and so "I'm going to leave the forum to stew in its hate-filled pools of dog bile."
He'd never have tolerated the "kill all the Muslims" attitude that dominates the FR now.
I think it sounds better than "pontificating pondscum-sucking windbag". Heck yea, IMHO "The Great Communicator" would have loved FreeRepublic.
