The problem with false alarms is largely systems with motion detectors that try to stop a thief who breaks in. A heavy truck rolling by, or someone bumping the car as they walk to their own vehicle, sets the system off. The unit in my car has no such motion detector. It goes off when a door is opened and the alarm is on. The only false alarms are caused by me forgetting to deactivate the alarm when I get something from the car! If the ordinance allowed such systems it would be okay, but to ban car alarms outright is an example of dumb government at work.

Good point. What you propose seems to be the least restrictive means of getting at the problem.

It has a screw on knob on the positive cable that you can unscrew manually. Best anti-theft I've found. You can pick them up at any auto parts store.

Some say Kerry is for it, and some say he is against it, but the truth is very much the opposite.

Yes, rent control that works about as well as gun control.

By the way.. let's ban cars.. which would therefore get rid of car horns.. and planes.. I hate when planes fly over my houses.. and helicopters.. I mean I know they save lifes of people who fall down cliffs in the forest.. or put out fires.. but I get really annoyed when they fly near me.. and polic helicopters.. I know they help get criminals but I really hate their spotlights on top of the noise...

As I said in my first post.. get ear muffs.

As I said in my first post.. get ear muffs.

I am talking about UNNECESSARY noise, like barking dogs and worthless car alarms, that come onto my private property, kinda like if I came over your house and let a big fart in your face. Get it?

What if my car is my mosque, and the alarm is my call to prayer?

My car "alarm" is silent; it pages me...

Actually the only comparison is if you farted in your backyard and I happened to be in the backyard and heard it.. except if I had the window down and I was inside.. then if I heard it I would sue you.

"NYC Plans Ban on Car Alarms"

Is NYC going to foot the bill car owners will incur for the modifications on cars that set the alarm automatically when locked?

I suspect they can be redesigned against that -- run for a few minutes and shut off, or some other change.

Yep, there are already systems designed to do precisely that. One is called the "Stop-Action", manufactured by Jacobs Electronics. If you don't toggle a hidden momentary-on switch before starting the car, it will run for two minutes or so, then kill the engine. The longer they crank the engine without first disabling the system, the more "dead time" is added.

It even has a floor-mounted switch - just like the high-beam switch in older cars. If someone carjacks you, click the switch with your toe before exiting. The same thing will happen - two minutes, then the engine stalls.

The only car alarm that seems worthwhile is the silent pager type, tripped by a door or hood pin switch. Those give few false alarms and don't annoy the neighbors. Sirens don't draw attention, anyway. Well, maybe an old surplus civil defense air raid siren would - but those will run your battery down in a flash! ;-)

Click the link.

Battery Disconnect Switches

I like the kind with the big removable key. There are others with a push-pull design to which an extension handle can be attached. You can actually mount that type down low on the firewall and have the actuating handle *inside* the car.

Car Alarms are useless and very annoying in NYC during a thunderstorm or even when a large truck drives by setting off car alarms.

You may recall 9/11 in Downtown NYC where the streets where a cacophony of Car Alarms complicating an already stressful situation.

Good For NYC!

Barking dogs and car alarms can be heard inside, even with the windows down, especially in the wee hours of the morning when everything else is relatively quiet. It's kinda like a neighbor with a boom box blasting and vibrating the windows. I believe we all have our rights and freedoms, but sometimes they conflict. A neighbors right to have a barking dog, a malfunctioning car alarm, or a boom box should end at the property line. I have the right to my peace and quiet on my private property.

As for the fart, you should be OK if you put a clothespin on your nose, just like the earplugs would help me with the noise.

Thanks for the info. I bought my car (used) with an alarm in it. May have been necessary for the previous owner, thanks to various bits of evidence I gleaned from the car (ham radio operator, once expensive stereo, likely not garaged, probably apartment dweller, short in-city commute, etc.).

Never use it unless there's something of real value in it, which is rare. I've been startled by it far more often when it gets set by accident. Worst is getting ready to go to work in a peaceful near-rural summer morning, birds twittering away in the trees, glorious warm sun shining down, you open the car door and... your neighbors (there aren't many) know you've been had again.
