Help for a first timer....

Posted on 05/14/2004 7:43:11 AM PDT by AgDuckHunter

I have a question for you guys. I have a liberal buddy who ALWAYS brings up the "fact" that Iraq has NO ties to Al Qaeda or 9/11. However, I heard on talk radio a few days ago that one of Clinton's top security guys said in a senate hearing within the past mont or two that there was a definitive link between the two. Question 1, who made that statement? 2) What was his proof? 3) Is there anywhere I can find the transcript or a link to his exact statements? I'm tired of all his liberal BS & would really like to throw this into his court, but I don't want to bring it up without plenty of backup. Thanks in advance for y'alls help. -ADH

I can't help you with regard to your question. I'll advise that you place your question in the thread title next time, as it will get more exposure that way. Welcome.

I don't have an answer to your specific question, but please send your "buddy" the following:

Less than two months before 9/11/01, the state-controlled Iraqi newspaper “Al-Nasiriya” carried a column headlined, “American, an Obsession called Osama Bin Ladin.” (July 21, 2001)

In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US “with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.”

The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden “will strike America on the arm that is already hurting,” and that the US “will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs” – an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, “New York, New York”.

Abu Al-Zarqawi, the Osama Bin Laden Lieutenant who beheaded Nick Berg, ran the Ansar Al Islam/Al Qaeda training facility in Northern Iraq long before 9/11. Go read Wretchard's blog/post The End of the Beginning (The Belmont Club) for more info on Zarqawi.

The training camp at Salman Pak, Iraq was used to train terrorists on how to hijack airliners.

If he doesn't accept either of those facts as a smoking gun, nothing you can say will convince him.

I can take him behind the Green Door and show him the intel, after which I would go to prison for 10 years, and he still would not believe.

Here's a start (excerpted from Ann C's recent column):

Last year papers were found in Iraqi intelligence headquarters documenting Saddam's feverish efforts to establish a working relationship with al-Qaida. In response to Iraq's generous invitation to pay all travel and hotel expenses, a top aide to Osama bin Laden visited Iraq in 1998, bearing a message from bin Laden. The meeting went so well that bin Laden's aide stayed for a week. Iraq intelligence officers sent a message back to bin Laden, the documents note, concerning "the future of our relationship."

In addition, according to Czech intelligence, a few months before the 9-11 attacks, Mohammed Atta met with Iraqi intelligence agents in Prague.

Finally, a Clinton-appointed federal judge, U.S. District Court judge Harold Baer, has made a legal finding that Iraq was behind the 9-11 attacks -- a ruling upheld by the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals last October. When some judge discovers a right to gay marriage in a 200-year-old document written by John Adams, Americans are forced to treat the decision like the God-given truth. But when a federal judge issues a decision concluding that Iraq was behind the 9-11 attacks, it is a "misperception" being foisted on the nation by Fox New Channel.

Lastly, I recommend you tell your lib friend to ask Nick Berg if there are AQ in Iraq. Oh wait, he can't answer us anymore....

Read up on Dick Clarke and the Sudan Aspirin factory.

"On January 22, as demonstrated in The Washington Post, the government's story underwent yet another permutation. Currently, according to White House terrorism czar Richard Clarke, the U.S. is "sure" that the Iraqis were the sinister force behind Al Shifa, producing what the Post characterized as "powdered VX-like substance at the plant that, when mixed with bleach and water, would have become fully active nerve gas."

Al Qaida awakened America to the war with terrorists, and it's a mistake to limit that war to AQ. We have been attacked by numerous groups and AQ is just the newest of a long list. Iraq has always supported terrorists of any group. Read up on Abu Nidal, who Saddam finally had an apparent falling out with and had killed. GWB didn't just declare war on AQ, and he's right to have said in his address after 9/11 that the war is broader than just AQ.

I'd cut him some slack here- it's a legitimate question, if he's new to FR he'd likely have missed the threads about it. Even if he is a leftie he seems polite about it, unless he gets rude I'd say let's give him a chance to learn something.
