In May of 1990, Newsday's syndicated columnist Jimmy Breslin received an e-mail criticizing one of his columns as "sexist."
That so outraged Mr. Breslin that he denounced the sender, a female Korean-American reporter, as a yellow, slant-eyed cur. And he went on the Howard Stern filth show to further discuss his displeasure.
Newsday, Long Island's daily newspaper, which at one time had a New York City edition, suspended Breslin for two weeks without pay, even though he apologized to the young reporter.
They should have fired this New York thug who has now been charged with fabricating quotes in order to ridicule the Rev. Louis Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition and Sheldon's opposition to sodomist "marriage."
The Washington Times reports:
Mr. Sheldon says he has never met or spoken to Mr. Breslin. But Mr. Breslin, in his column yesterday, recounted a supposed conversation he had with the minister:"I know Jimmy Breslin fills his column with interesting and often fictional characters," Mr. Sheldon said in a telegram to the editor of Newsday, a Long Island, N.Y., newspaper. "But the line between amusing fiction and political commentary seems to have been blurred in today's Breslin column. I have never met Jimmy Breslin, never had the conversation described in his column today and never said those sentences to anyone in my life."
Mr. Sheldon added: "I did attend the partial birth signing ceremony at the White House. My picture was on the front page of another New York newspaper, the New York Times, with (New York) Cardinal (Edward M.) Egan and others. That was five months ago not 'the other day' as Breslin states in his column. But such discrepancies in fact are minor when you are making quotes up out of whole cloth."
Here's what Mr. Breslin wrote regarding Mr. Sheldon:
Egan was there shoulder-to-shoulder with Jerry Falwell and the great Bush favorite, the Rev. Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition. He is out of Anaheim, Calif., and now is in Washington because he has the big issue and he belongs downtown with it.
"Homosexuals are dangerous," Sheldon assured me one day. He was a short man with eyes gleaming when he mentioned how bad homosexuals truly are.
"How?"
"They proselytize. They come to the door, and if your son answers and nobody is there to stop it, they grab the son and run off with him. They steal him. They take him away and turn him into a homosexual."
"You should be confined," I told him.
"I speak the truth for the Lord," he said.
"You're a fruitcake," I told him.
"No, I speak the truth. They steal your son."
Newsday yesterday referred this columnist to Mr. Breslin, who did not return a phone message seeking comment.
Now the Washington Post's excellent media critic Howard Kurtz reports that an apparently raving Breslin has denounced him as well:
Newsday columnist Jimmy Breslin took some heat last week for attributing to the Rev. Lou Sheldon some inflammatory comments about gays, 12 years after Breslin says they were made. Sheldon, who heads the Traditional Values Coalition, insists he never uttered the remarks about how gays are "dangerous" and "proselytize your kids."Breslin at first insisted he had written a column with Sheldon's comments after an initial 1992 piece that quoted some milder remarks by the minister. Then he called back to say "there was no second column" because, "with great shame," he decided it would be too controversial and "retreated like a coward."
Then he called again to say that he had written about the alleged Sheldon comments in a 1995 column. "You people are all the same you're lazy [expletives] in this business," Breslin declared, pointedly including this reporter.
The reason no one, including Newsday, could find the 1995 column which did contain the offending quotes is that Breslin didn't name Sheldon, referring only to "a short little minister from Anaheim, Calif."
On Thursday, Newsday ran an "editor's note" attempting to explain Breslin's actions, saying "the quotes attributed to Sheldon in the April 7 column were incorrect and not Sheldon's precise words."
Jimmy Breslin is the left's alcohol-addled loose cannon. One wonders why Newsday continues to put up with his embarrassments.
(((Meg)))!
Man, when is Newsday going to put the hook on this senile old Lefty buzzard?
