Parents Who Choose Not to Vaccinate Children Upset with Some in the Medical Community

Some eastern Iowa parents feel they're treated with hostility because they refuse to immunize their children. They've discovered that saying no to vaccines means that pediatric offices can say no to providing care to their children.

At 19 months old, Ambryia Mulnix has never felt a needle poke into her skin. Her mother, Arielle, says she's done her own research and comes to this conclusion on vaccines. Arielle told TV9, “I don't feel there's a need for them. And I’ve seen it can cause deaths too, so more safety, and my belief." But she soon discovered her belief shuts out pediatric care for Ambryia. Arielle says, "I’ve been turned down at pediatricians, I can only go to the emergency room, or family doctor."

Iowa Health Physicians Clinic has had a policy for three years now, it does not provide routine, pediatric care to non-immunized children. Ken Anderson told TV9, “It comes from the feeling that the immunizations are so important to children that it's such a strong feeling of ours, that if we can't come to an agreement of that fact, we feel it's unlikely we'll be a match on many other things."

Arielle says, "It's hurtful because I’d rather not be judged on my belief and what I believe is best for my child." As a result, Arielle uses her health insurance to cover emergency room and urgent care center visits when Ambryia's sick.

Arielle feels fighting off infections will only make her baby stronger. But pediatricians see it differently. One doctor says, “The germs are out there, and your body has to be able to fight it, if the body comes into contact. The immunizations are a way for your body to recognize that in a very safe way."

But this mom feels her beliefs, even if it means no pediatric care, are the safest for her child. “It's better than getting pressured into getting her shots, and not being judged going in there."

Mercy Care Community Physicians do not have pediatricians, but say their family doctors provide routine care to non-immunized children.

Can't say I blame her. Ever wonder why the drug companies have switched from vaccinating adults with Hep. B vaccine to infants and children. Hint: The vaccine is not effective in Adults...for more than 6 months.
They are experimenting with our children by injecting foreign proteins into them with no case studies.

It probably won't solve the problem of mass hysteria, but it will help.

This woman is an ignorant narcissist who endangers everyones children. No immunization is perfect. In any immunized population there will be vulnerable individuals. The purpose is to reduce vectors. She is also a free-rider on those who immunize.

Let these parents not vaccinate their children, but have them not get government funds to take care of them when they come down with the devastating effects of the diseases.

Why have we not seen studies that compare the health of non-vaccinated children with vaccinated children?

The studies I have read are all one-sided and written poorly. I would like to know the effects of not vaccinating children.

My son is 11, and he has somehow avoided catching chicken pox even tho he's been exposed to classmates with it over the years. I recently got a letter stating that I had to provide proof that he's either had it or been vaccinated for it before he enters 6th grade in the fall. It's not like it's German measles or something ( which I had when my mom was pregnant with my brother back in '63 ) ... being a mother I hate the thought of him being stuck but I guess I'll do it. Not looking forward to it. Ugh.

Adults are still vaccinated for Hep B. They ADDED the vaccine for kids, let me repeat..ADDED, not switched.

Every new hire at my nursing agency is offered Hep B if they do not already have it. They can refuse it, but do so with the full understanding that they will come into contact with blood/body fluids.

New hires that have already had their full set of shots have titers drawn to see if a booster is necessary. Mine were still sufficient a full four years after my last shot. Moreover, no immunization (to my knowledge) is guaranteed a lifetime, that is why folks my age are still at risk for smallpox.

PLEASE vaccinate your kids, folks. The benefits far outweigh the risks.

Lots of dead, disfiguered, and crippled children. The "control group" is in graves dated 19th century and prior.

People can believe what they wish, but you can't ignore history.

You do NOT want your son to contract chicken pox as an adult, it can be a lot more serious then.

And don't fall into the trap of thinking "well he made it this far"....all three of my sisters had the ckn pox as adults, and a coworker contracted them at age 41.

I think now you are beginning to understand what's happening and has been happening since the 50's and 60's. This is a money making scam. Children catch all types of diseases and if they are strong then their bodies produce their own antibodies. I would say this happens 99% of the time, but we have no data to prove that. How are we to know what the benefits are of a vaccine if we do not truly compare the numbers. Nothing is more efficient than the human body. You slightly weaken your immune system when you inject yourself with foreign proteins.
We live in the 21st century. Our water supply and hygeine is light years more advanced than our granparants and parents time.

I'm 32 years old and have not had the chicken pox. More than likely I formed my own antibodies against this disease since my sister had it.

I'm surprised it's mandatory to do this. I wonder how many children die of chicken pox vs. how many children die of adverse reactions to this vaccine?

Well, there's also the "free rider" problem.

It's actually perfectly safe to not vaccinate your kids, as long as everyone else DOES vaccinate THEIR kids.

We don't quite have a big enough "critical mass" of idiots that don't vaccinate their kids in the US for a real epidemic of one of these old childhood diseases to break out and sustain itself.

We will eventually, though, I suspect.

Why would you give a child a vaccine for a bloodborne pathogen? What...do you expect them to be gay or be intravenous drug users?

Treating people like vectors violates both the Hippocratic Oath and the Kantian dictum that humans should not be means to an end, but only ends to themselves.

You can justify dangerous immunizations on the amoral grounds of cost-effectiveness, but not on the more important grounds of ethics.

There is no harm in raising a fuss or even a brouhaha about the relatively slow pace of improvement in vaccines, especially as it concerns the willful introduction of mercury into vaccines.
