Speaking of space, by all means see the movie Gravity. It was recommended by a friend at NASA. Spectacular space shots and weightlessness effects.

I believe there were some big fires in Michigan at the same time.

This fire actually burned a good part of NE Wisconsin. The "Peshtigo" part actually stretched almost all the way down to the city of Green Bay and started again across the bay.

Of interesting note, particularly to Catholics, is the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help.

The Sisters from the convent tell the farmers to carry Marys statue around the 5 acre grounds while everyone who had fled there follows and prays. The fire destroys and kills everything in the area but does not touch the 5 acre grounds (convent, school, chapel, Sisters, farm families and herd) except to scorch the fence as the fire passed by.

Fires burned Manistee, Saugatuck, and Holland, Michigan on that day.
