HMPFH! I'm gonna have to get out more. I had no idea the O'Leary cow kicked over so many lanterns.

The cows name was Comet ? Kind of racy for a cow wasn't it ?

Maybe, but the whole region was a tinderbox and it wouldn't have taken more than a lightning storm, even dry lightning, to set it off. In Alaska there are hundreds of forest or tundra fires every summer, sometimes dozens every day set off by lightning. A lot of times there is no rain.

That is a good page. In the Ramakien (the Thai version of the Ramayana) Hanuman is funloving and with an eye for the pretty lady, unlike the rather straight-laced Indian version. One of the highlights of going to Wat Pra Kiew in Bangkok is the remarkable mural of the Ramakien surrounding the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

I did some googling on this. (Chicago girl who honeymooned in Saugatuk found this interesting.)
Fire that night just didn't happen in Chicago and Saugatuk but also in Holland, Manistee and Fennville.
The author thinks it landed in Lake Michigan. Hate to think what would have happened if it landed on land. Death toll could have been astronomical.
Interesting post.

At the same time there was also a fire in Saugatuk Michigan...As well as Peshtigo, Wisconsin, where many more lives were lost than the more publicized Chicago blaze...

were there any reports of sunken ships or tsunamis crashing on shore? Not that I could find. Wrecks were attributed to the thick smoke.
I did find that the fire hit Ontario also.

"Not that I could find. Wrecks were attributed to the thick smoke."Even an atmospheric explosion like Tunguska in 1908 over the water would have caused a tsunami that couldn't have been missed. BTW, there was another 'explosion' somewhere in Siberia last year that I've not heard anything about since it was first reported.
RightWhale, have you heard anything else on the Siberian explosion/impact reported last year?

I believe the meteor of last year was not at all the size of the Tsunguska event. It may have nearly dislodged a squirrel from its tree.

In his book "My life and loves" Frank Harris tells about the fire (he had just brought up a herd of cattle from Texas). He describes ships on the lake hundreds of yards of shore on fire. He also describes the lynching of an accused looter by a mob.

Spread from the shore up their mooring ropes and then unleashed them, I guess.

He doesn't say, he just tell about what he saw that night. I don't think that the ships caught fire from the heat, as he said that tens of thousands of people were crowding the shore to get away from the heat.
